depression?

ok here is some information about me. i'm 21, i've been married

and divorced once already. when i was about 8 my best friend (cousin)

died from getting bucked off his horse and i didn't get to go to his

funeral. so it changed me some because i didn't want to believe that

he was actually gone. in 1996 my dad's dad died of cancer and i was

really close to him so it hurt alot. in high school i was always

arguing with my parents and i was depressed alot. my best friend was

the only person i talked to. i got married in june of 2006 to my high

school sweetheart and a few months later things weren't going very

well between us and we got divorced in december of 2006. i meet my

fiance in about august of 2006 and found out i was pregnant in

september 2006 (had nothing to do with my divorce). my son was born

april 24, 2007 at 4:11am. then about 6 weeks later my mom calls me to

tell me that her mom died. i knew she wasn't going to live forever,

because she'd been in and out of the hospital many times and she used

to smoke, which made her health worse. i took my son to the funerl

because i was still on maturnity leave and didn't want to leave him

with anyone. my fiance came with me to help drive and take care of

our son (my fiance is the father of my son). my fiance and i don't

have the most perfect relationship, we have our ups and downs like

everyone else. about 6 months after my grandma's funeral, my mom

calls me about 10pm and tells me that my cousin had just shot himself

a couple hours ago. it hit me really hard because i was really close

to him and his sister. there is a history of depression on both sides

of my family. i don't get out much because i don't have the time or

the money. money is something that we aruge about all the time.

 

i eat basically anything, so i'm not on much of a diet. i work at wal-

mart so i'm on me feet all the time. i have very bad seasonal

allergies and exierse enduced asthma. i don't do anything for my

asthma but i do take genaric claritn for my allergies, but it doesn't

help much. i take a muli-vitamin everyday.

 

i hope this extra information helps. if there's anything else that

you need to know about me, just let me know.

 

ok so i had a doctor appointment on thursday the 17th of april to

just have a check up. well i guess according to the doctor i'm

suffering from depression. so now what? she gave me a trial pack of

lexapro, so i hope it helps some. i haven't been feeling myself

lately. i've been tired all the time and just no energy to do

anything. i started to do yoga to help reduce my stress, i don't know

if it's helping much. any other suggestions?

Please do consider a Naturopathic Physician (ND). They'll put you on

the right path to returning happiness to your life. It'll start with

proper nutrition and a few supplements. Don't be bombarded with

supplements; there re a few that will really help you.

 

Remember, you didn't have these problems develop last night; they have

come over YEARS! Be well aware that whether it is supplements or

medicines, you must take them for a long time period.

 

Stay with it; you CAN win and find sunshine again. Start with a GOOD

daily multi-vitamin, Vit. B Complex (100mg), 3X DAILY for 30 days,

then 1X DAILY; Vit. C (1000mg) 1X daily for 1week, then 2X daily for a

week, then 3X daily. These will ease your tiredness; NOT cure them.

Hi PixiFairy,

 

Let me say first that with all the stressors you have had that I am

not surprised that you are feeling overwhelmed and depressed.

Marriage, divorce, deaths and illness in the family and births are

some of the top major recognised stressors.

 

I have suffered from depression most of my adult life - mainly as a

result of a chemical imbalance, which it doesn't sound like you

have... however, I hope I may be able to give some good advice to you

nonetheless.

Some supplements which can be good for depression:

 

St. John's Wort and 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) - these are good

supplements for depression, however DO NOT take if you are currently

taking a prescribed antidepressant medication. This could cause

serotonin levels in the brain to rise too high, bringing on a whole

different set of problems. Also 5-HTP is contraindicated in systemic

lupus erythematosus, asthma, ischaemic heart disease. St. John's Wort

0.3% hypericin 300mg – 3x per day, 50 mg 3x per day with meals for 2

weeks, then can increase to 100 mg 3x per day if lower dose not

effective.

 

 

S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) (1200 mg/day to start, 400mg/day

maintenance) and Phosphatidylserine (100 mg, 3x per day with 400 mg

max) can also be helpful for depression.

I'll be blunt and say if you are taking a basic one-a-day multivitamin

from the drug store that is not going to be enough to support you

through so much stress. You do not say which one you are taking so I

cannot check what levels of which nutrients you might be getting.

 

Personally, I would be take a multi-mineral twice per day, a B vitamin

complex (B-50) twice per day, Vitamin C 1000 mg 2-3 times per day,

and a good quality fish oil supplement twice per day, minimum. With

so much stress over a long period of time, your body's reserves become

depleted.

 

Also, do make sure you do the usual 'no brainer' stuff - eat healthy

whole foods, (no caffeine, sugar or artificial anything), drink plenty

of water, get plenty of sleep (if you can). Yoga is a great

destresser, so good choice there. Mainly find something you can do

for you that you can fit into your day that will help de-stress you

and make you feel good - meditation, exercise, a funny TV show even.

 

I have personally tried counselling, hypnotherapy, and meditation for

stress and depression. These all helped a little in some way.

 

Lately, I have been trying EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) which I

have found to be outstandingly excellent in helping me cope with

stress and clearing past emotional traumas. Search this site - there

have been many postings on EFT of late. And it's so easy - if you can

find someone who could coach you through just 3-4 sessions I would

think you could learn to do it for yourself thereafter.

And lastly, in alternative medicine circles depression and allergies

are often associated with an under-functioning liver (in addition to

all the stress in your case). You might think of adding some

supplements to support the liver (milk thistle and lecithin, also the

SAMe mentioned above). Avoid alcohol.

Did you have your thyroid checked yet? Make sure FREE

T-3 and FREE T-4 are also checked. Also take your

basal temperature (use thermometer with mercury at

end) before you get up in the morning by putting your

thermometer under your armpits. Your temp should be

98.7 if lower than that you have hypothyroid. Better

still don't go to a family doctor/internist. Go to an

endoctrinologist specializing in thyroid. Do a google

on your area endoc and see their CV if they are

specialists in thyroid.

It would be a good idea to saute onion, garlic and ginger and put it

in your foods for lunch and supper. Please don't tell me you eat

fast foods from WalMart. Make your own foods and mix them DAILY with

the sauteed onions, garlic and ginger. Eat lots of steamed veggies

also. What kind of yoga are you doing? What exercises. What

pranayams? You should be able to tell if it is helping or not.
