Just one day after Earth Day, celebrated on 22 April to promote the need for re-examining our relationship with the environment, Rethinking AIDS Day prompts us to critically examine the widely held idea that the immune weakness we see in AIDS is caused by an infective virus. According to HEAL, " Rethinking AIDS Day (RAD) is April 23rd to remember (not celebrate) the anniversary of the infamous Gallo/Heckler news conference announcing the 'probable' cause of AIDS had been discovered. By the time the science was published and found wanting, it was too late. " RethinkingAIDS goes into some more detail about that botched announcement of " the cause " of AIDS: April 23rd is a day to rethink our understanding of AIDS and HIV, to remember the fraud that was perpetrated on this day in 1984 when Margaret Heckler announced that Robert Gallo had discovered the probable cause of AIDS at a press conference, after a blood test had been patented, but before any of the science was published. It turned out later that the papers contained information that did not establish anything, but they did eventually trigger several investigations into the scientific misconduct of Robert Gallo, including a congressional investigation. Robert Gallo had powerful friends and good luck, some investigations were dropped when the definition of scientific fraud or misconduct was changed, and the congressional investigation was terminated as a side effect of the takeover of the US Congress by the Republicans.
