Guest guest
Moderator's Note: Does he have the urgings to go? DesertSkyNM ------- My grandson, 12 years old has been severely constipated for a couple of years. He holds it in because it is so painful to defecate. My son doesn't seem to realize how serious this is and does little to help except encourage the boy to go, threatening him with an enema if he doesn't. He eats a normal diet and his 8 year old sister has no problems this way. The boy does drink a lot of milk that I've heard can be constipating. But I think it's gone past just withholding some foods. He needs to do something more drastic I'm afraid. It is now an emotional issue, as well as a physical one. Does anyone have any advice for a holistic or dietetic treatment that might help this boy? He says he can't swallow pills... but he could take a liquid if it doesn't taste too bad. I am careful to not say what I would like to say about all this because my kids don't appreciate grandmother's intereference. Any ideas from this wonderful, knowledgeable group? Guest guest
> My grandson, 12 years old has been severely constipated for a > couple of years. You might try looking at his digestion. My toddler and I have these same issues. The first thing I did was switch us over to raw milk when I found out that pasteurized milk destroys enzymes (which aid in digestion) and destroys 38% of B Vitamins and other nutrients. http://www.realmilk.com/whichchoose.html Then I started adding probiotic on a daily basis. Things like kefir, yogurt and fermented vegetables. I have an awesome corn relish recipe that the toddler really likes. This helps with balancing gut flora, which provides a healthy environment for food to digest and nutrients to assimilate. Also, I added cod liver oil - we're still on a capsule formula for the toddler till I figure out how to get him to take the liquid. Then I started restricting processed foods, stopped driving through McDonald's and started making all of our meals and treats. I use sucanat and grade B maple syrup to sweeten things. Upping fat intake (good, clean fat) helped both of us with sweet cravings and digestion. We use coconut oil. I use it to make eggs and bake things. Switching to sprouted bread instead of whole grain or wheat bread helped immensely with constipation issues. Even if you tried a few of these things you might see results. Of course, you'd have to get the boy's parents involved which can be difficult. Good luck to you. -vanessa
