Hi all! I'm searching for an answer to why I have swelling in my

hands and body as well as extreme fatigue when I eat baked goods.

I've had the sypmtoms since early adulthood but since I've gotten

older it is much worse.

At first I thought it was the gluten but even if I eat gluten free

bread or other baked goods my hands swell so bad I can't make a fist

and I get extremely tired. I can sleep for 24 hours with just

getting up for 15 minutes to an hour at a time and then go back to

sleep and still feel tired. I cannot keep my eyes open. After about

36 hours the fatigue goes away.

It's worse if I eat something that is sweet and baked, like cake,

even gluten free cake.

I also have the same reaction to beer and a greater reaction to pizza

crust. So I'm thinking it the yeast? I can't find anything

pertaining to yeast that matches these sypmtoms.

Could it be leaky gut? Is there a cure for leaky gut?

Can anyone help? No doctor has a clue to what I'm even talking about.

HI,

Does wine do the same thing. I have an intolerance to sulfites and have the

same reactions. Almost all breads and everything else has preservatives in it.

Going on an all natural no preservatives helped me.

I have swollen hands and knuckles from baking soda and baking

powder - so avoiding those helped a lot.

Hi Bobbie,

It's hard to say... but I would vote for leaky gut just because you

are clearly have some sort of allergic reaction to something you're

eating and that usually means (a) protein not being fully digested

and/or (b) these undigested or reaction causing particles making their

way through the normally tight gut lining into the blood stream, thus

causing a reaction.

There has been a discussion on leaky gut recently here:

http://health./message/50686

If I were you, I'd find a Naturopathic Doctor or naturopathic

nutritional therapist who will do some allergy testing. Or do an

elimination diet to try to find out what is causing this.

Before following a protocol to heal my leaky gut I had real problems

with gluten (wheat/barley/rye), milk, and eggs (both yolks and whites)

- so baked goods were really a problem for me too. I can now tolerate

them in small doses, but I still tend to avoid them.

The problem with baked goods is that there are so many ingredients

it's hard to pinpoint. As you say, it could also be the baking soda,

or a preservative used in it. Possibly a food colouring? Or if white

flour, even the bleach used to process the flour.

Best to cut out such things altogether, and go for simple whole foods

and view the baked goods as treats to be consumed sparingly.

All the best,

Shron

I don't drink wine but if I remember correctly, I think so, but to a lesser

extent. I just tried eating rye crisp last night but it made my hands swell.

Bobbie,

I don't think you saw my reply. You sound as if you have a sulfite problem. It's

in pizza crust, it makes baking soda and banking powder white, it's in all

fermented products (beer). I can't have any store bought cakes or bread unless

it's preservative free . There is a group on sulfitesnomore, it will help

you.
