Guest guest
What are your suggestions for treating / softening the skin on hands and feet ? Thanks for your suggestions
Guest guest
Put castor oil on feet. Then put a plastic bag on and then a sock. go to bed and in the morning when taking a shower use a pumice stone to rub off calluses. Do this for a few days. For hands, put flax seeds in vinegar and add lavendar oil. Soak overnight. Strain out seeds next day and Put this mixture in a dispenser. The vinegar smell will go away when it dries or you can use lemon juice but it will spoil if not used fairly soon. Guest guest
Balsam Fir Butter is a wonderful skin butter to use on chapped calloused and cracked hands. I gather the green tips of the Balsam Fir in early spring while they are bright green and still tight. Put your fir tips in a jar and cover with oil, this year I used Grape Seed oil and my butter is a lovely green color. Put a lid on the jar and let sit for around four weeks. Strain out the oil using a jelly bag, I like to use a new baby diaper, the unfolded kind, cheese cloth is to weak and loosely woven. I press this to get as much oil out as I can. I put the oil in a new jar so it can set a week and if there is any water it will sink to the bottom. Pour the oil off and discard the water. Add Vitamin E to your oil, about a teaspoon per pint to preserve it. If you will be storing it for a while. Here is the recipe to make the Balsam butter 160 grams unrefined cocoa butter 80 grams coconut oil 32 grams avocado oil 100 grams balsam oil 23 grams bees wax 2 teas vitamin E 3 teas corn starch You need an electric beater and glass jars to put the butter in. Plan on enough jars for around 30 oz of butter. I have a gram scale and I put a small bowl on it and tare it and then weight each ingredient. Put all but the Vitamin E and corn starch in a stainless-steal bowl set this in a larger pot of simmering water or use a double boiler. Melt all the oils and bees wax together, when all is melted take the bowl out of pan and start cooling. Gently stir the oils as they cool and through the whole process scrape the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. When the oils are starting to thicken you start to whip your oils into a butter. With the electric beater start whipping the mixture. I put it in and out of the bowl of snow as I am working to get it to start turning into butter. I will whip for about three minutes and set the bowl into the snow and whip for about three minutes, scraping the sides of the bowl in between with a rubber spatula. Repeat this in and out of the cold bowl at least five times. It will start to look like whipped cream and be thick and fluffy. It will double in volume. After about five times of in and out of your cold bowl add the corn starch and Vitamin E. The corn starch gives it an nice consistency and keeps it from being really oily when you rub the butter on to your hands. The hardest part is getting it into the jars, I use a small the rubber spatula to get it into the jars. This butter smells so good, like a fir tree, and it good for hands and feet, good on things like eczema and especially good on babies bottoms. Guest guest
Hi, What I do is use a foot file... have a warm bath or soak hands/feet in warm water for at least 10 minutes. The use the foot file to rub off the dead skin. If the calloused skin is really thick, you won't get it all in one go the first time. You'll have to repeat this over a period of several days. I have found though - once I got my own feet to being soft again, I only have to do this once a week to keep it up. The foot file I use comes from The Body Shop - it's double sided and pretty cheap: http://www.thebodyshop.com/bodyshop/browse/product_detail.jsp?productId=prod1200\ 003 & categoryId=cat20075 But I have found that Dr. Scholl's also make a similar one (Dual-Action Swedish File): http://www.drscholls.com/product.aspx?prodid=8 I also use a thick cream for moisturising - cocoa or shea butter. Hope this helps, Sharon
Guest guest
Should have mentioned in previous reply.... dry off hands and feet after bathing -use the foot file while the skin is dry, but still soft after the bath.
