Thankfully I live in an area where the freeways aren't prevalent. What is niacin? Is that the B-vitamin? And what is flushing? How would I take niacin? In pill form I assume and with food? Thanks for sharing that. Guest guest
Dawn, Niacin is Vitamin B3 - you can find 'no flush' versions of B3. Also a good idea to take a B complex supplement in conjunction. Regards Sharon
Guest guest
I also heard you should take a good quality B complex vitamin supplement. I took the " flush " version, but low amounts and worked my way up until I had a flush. I don't know if the " no flush " niacin is as effective. From what I understand the flush is a release of histimine, and it lasts typically about 30-60 minutes. I highly recommend trying it but in small amounts, expecially when you start. It is inexpensive and I can drive on the freeways again. Yea!!! Carol , " sharonstrahan " <sharonstrahan wrote: > > Dawn, > > Niacin is Vitamin B3 - you can find 'no flush' versions of B3. Guest guest
Hi Dawn, There are a couple of kinds of vitamin B3: - nicotinic acid - nicotinamide or niacinamide nicotinic acid provides the flushing effect... that is the blood vessels dilate and histamine is released. So your skin will go very pink and you may itch a little. The flush is harmless and will pass within an hour or so. This form of niacin is especially recommended for cholesterol lowering properties. nicotinamide (or niacinamide) does not produce the flushing effect and is not believed to be as beneficial in lowering cholesterol; however, it is still good for other functions of B3 (like the production of neurotransmitters). In any case, which form you choose is entirely personal if you are not concerned about cholesterol... I personally don't care for the flushing effect. Although, as Carol pointed out, you can start with a very low dose and work your way up over time to minimise the flush effect. Personally, I choose to take a B50 complex twice daily as part of a depression and anxiety management programme. cheers Sharon
