" A close friend " who used to have depression and anxiety, and who used to be

prescribed zoloft and ativan, found that other things work well: kava kava, or

tea made from valerian root, passion flower, hops, and skullcap (steep the

valeriana in cold water for a day in the frig; use hot water to steep the other

herbs; mix and store in a jug in the frig) help relieve anxiety.

St Johns Wort is a good tea for depression.

Niacin was experimented with years ago. I spoke with a psychiatrist who used to

use this. The doses were massive; and probably way too high for these

experiments. They seemed to indicate it worked, but flushing was a problem, so

it was dropped.

But for mood problems it seems to help keep one from the ups and downs. It has

many uses, but imho this is the most blessed side effect- ie while it reduces

cholestral and opens blood veseels thus promoting better circulation, it also

detoxifies. I dont know why it works, but it does. I use about 200-700 mg at a

time. It gives a flush but last only for about 20 minutes.

I, too, have anxiety and these supplements have helped me:

ashwaganda, L-theanine, kava, GABA, or a combo of

valerian/passionflower/hops. Of course, not all at once. You may

want to look them up in a alternative medicine website and see which

one seems to fit your needs. Also, when I travel, I carry Rescue

Remedy (a Bach Flower Essence) in my purse so I can take a few drops

when needed. BTW, I also use it on my dog when she is experiencing

fear from a thunder storm or fire works. It really does wonders for

her,too.

Good luck.........I know how you feel, seriously.

Gaba, L-Theanine, Magnesium, and especially 5-HTP all have a calming

effect. Also taking 2000mg of Omega 3 fish oil helps.

5-HTP is a natural SSRI.

There are also herbs that have a calming effect like Valerian, Hops,

Passion Flower, Chamomile, and Lemmon Balm.

Paula-

What is your diet like? I was very high anxiety during & week before

my menses, so I have found switching to a vegetarian and natural diet

my anxiety is very little, it took a couple of months to notice a

difference, but it was well worth it. In fact I feel better all

around. I do take supplements like calcium, magnesium, vit C, vit E &

B, etc.... I rotate Liver and kidney detoxes every three months.

Definitely calcium and magnesium, preferably in an acidic base to

facilitate absorption.

Vitamin B1 works for me very well also.

Good luck,

Just as a side note, my doctor recommended, to relieve the flushing

effect of Niacin, taking one aspirin at least one-half hour before

taking Niacin. I take two and it keeps the flushing down to where I

don't suffer too badly - just a bit 'tingly.' Considering all of the

benefits of Niacin I've read about, a little sensitivity doesn't bother

me.

I tried various vitamins and herbs for my anxiety that developed over

the past several years. I know some herbs help some people. It seems

that you need to experiment and find what works for you. I was

having mini panic attacks on the freeway. I tried very small amounts

of niacin (50 mg -100mg). I took it for detoxifying, not for anxiety.

To my surprise, in a week my anxiety was about 70% better, and by the

end of week 2 it was about 95% better. I took niacin for a while and

now I find that I need it only about 1x a week or so.

You could also add Valerian Root powder to your favorite bevarage; I

mix mine in with hot chocolate and dried milk powder and Green Tea;

I second the Vitamin B1 Thiamine; Imporves Memory if used daily.

The B Vitamins are found in Wheat Germ; Brwon Rice; Brewer's Yeast. --

It is true that what eats us often is the cause of illness. That is, when we are

angry, sad, fearful, etc it produces a physical effect in us, ie we get sick.

Avoiding the causes of stress is the key. One can pop pills all day or use

herbal teas or take niacin etc; but if the cause is left unaddressed then we

are wasting our time.

Sometimes a simple remedy to emotional upset is simply to talk to a good friend

about it (isnt that what folks essentially do in a 12 step meeting?). That's

basically what a counselor is- someone who listens and helps you put things in

perspective and figure out how to let go of fear- that whatever monster it may

be, it aint really that big; and there's sure enough a way to either avoid it

forever or get rid of it.

Then lets not forget prayer or quiet meditation, singing, playing musical

instruments (piano or harpsichord!), AND/OR strenuous exercise (cutting trees,

mowing grass, walking),etc.

Last but not least, there's sleep. Getting a few peaceful nights of sleep can

make a world of difference in recovery from all illness: " God gives to His

beloved in sleep " as the psalmist says. Melatonin is a very effective, non

narcotic, non harmful natural remedy for insomnia in those over 40; and anyone

in any recovery program can take it (I have used 1-6 mg; but 1-3 mg is quite

effective.)

Of course all the above is my non professional opinion and should not be relied

on as or in lieu of medical advise...

Paula,

Have you ever had a saliva test done for your adrenals? High anxiety is one

of the most common symptoms of adrenal issues. You can order your own test

from places like CanaryClub.org (which also includes thyroid and sex

hormones for $141).

My anxiety issues have increase tremendously by treating my adrenals. There

is also a correlation to PTSD and poor adrenal functioning.

Once you know why you have the anxiety, the type of treatment can be

targeted. A lot of people who take meds for anxiety end up worse over the

years because they haven't addressed the underlying cause.

Hi Paula,

You've had a lot of good advice here... I'll just add briefly:

- Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugar

- take a good calcium and magnesium supplement - would like to see

this in a 1-to-1 ratio (i.e. calcium 600mg and magnesium 600mg - or

similar)

- take a B50 complex twice daily... can reduce to B25 complex 2x

daily once the anxiety begins to subside

- look into food allergies - whether by test or by elimination diet

- avoid processed foods which may contain additives... MSG,

tartrazine, aspartame, etc. (that includes diet sodas)

Also the kava and Bach Rescue remedy are excellent ideas.

All the best,

Sharon
