Guest guest
Hey Martin, I TOTALLY disagree with you. This is not just a matter of semantics. If it is .. please quote me a reference for the terms you are using .. but not some silly European Union regulation because even you yourself admit they are TOTALLY asinine! > There sure are different grades of oil. If you are a wholesaler of > oils and go to a big French supplier for lavender oil they will ask > you " what grade " , i.e. how much linalool content, and then go make > the oil to suit the price you want to pay!! Likewise there are > grades of many oils particularly the citrus oils and ylang. Patchouli > oil is sold dependent on its adulteration with gurjun balsam oil. The information you have supplied confuses people. You are taking a contrarian approach to many things lately and I guess that's fine .. but it deserves .. no .. demands .. some explanation in order to not further confuse people .. the above just muddies the water. Nobody is talking about CUSTOM PRODUCED essential oils .. they are COMMERCIAL GRADE!!! Lavender is an extreme example .. France is an extreme Origin. Linalool content does NOT make a grade in an unmanipulated oil .. the manipulated 40/42 Lavender is considered as Commercial Grade .. but its made for the perfumeries .. NOT for aromatherapy. There are but two grades of oils accepted in the UNITED STATES .. they are Aromatherapy Grade and Commercial Grade. The former being one that is pure, unadulterated, and has NOT been manipulated in ANY MANNER by man beyond distillation, which is unto itself manipulation as it is not a natural occurrence. Commercial Grade is one that has been manipulated by man .. sometimes surreptitiously and without the knowledge of a buyer and sometimes based on the specific orders of the buyer .. which in ALL but few cases is either a cosmetics producer or perfumery. Distillers do NOT produce different grades of oil .. except for Ylang Ylang. Ylang Ylang is the ONLY fractionalized oil that is accepted by the purists in this industry as a manipulated oil .. but then, they have little choice unless they believe in Ylang Ylang Complete. Citrus is NOT produced in grades .. folded and cold-pressed and expeller pressed and distilled Citrus are NOT grades of oil .. the first one is a result of manipulation and the rest are various methods of production! The question from the list member was about grades .. and you know from whence the issue generates. Its about the crap put out by Dumb Living on their so-called " therapeutic " grade vs the rest of the world's sorry butt grade. This is what needs to be cleared up .. no need to confuse people who are seeking simple information!!! Your example of Patchouli is a very negative position. The oil is either adulterated or it is not adulterated .. there are no two ways about it!!!!!!!! There are TWO types of essential oils .. PURE and ADULTERATED! Pure oils can be high in quality or mediocre .. depends on the profile of the chemical constituents .. adulterated speaks for itself. IF this industry wants to agree on something .. hard to do .. I know .. one of the first things they need to agree on is a friggin language .. a common set of terms that anybody anywhere can use and know what the hell other folks are talking about. Its this lack of common language in AT that allows many slicksters to get by with their crap because folks read into their words what they want .. without have any references! > Most aromatherapy suppliers never even see these different grades > used by the big boys. > Martin That is because we are NOT the big boys! Your experience and that of most of the doomsayers I read screaming about the trade in Europe is based mostly on the fragrance and flavoring trade. Taking a negative position on oils in general .. claiming that the whole damn trade is crooked and oils not proven safe should not be used and such is doing nothing but confusing new folks and making them who have been around a while wonder if they have been BSing themselves for years! The friggin medical community says Aromatherapy is HYPE .. if they are right then we are all friggin idiots .. if they are wrong, then they are the friggin idiots. I KNOW they are wrong .. and I am not going to take HARD STAND on anything that I cannot prove either with science or my own personal experience or that of lots of other people .. to do otherwise is to risk being seen as a friggin idiot! Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch >>YEP on the shea butter Sharon! >> >>And I need to add something I forgot - when I wrote " But as for oil >> " grades " they don't exist. " I was referring to essential oils >>specifically. >> >>In addition to the shea butter(which the testing is at the moment >>voluntary) olive oil is another fatty oil that is graded >>http://www.ams.usda.gov/standards/oliveoil.pdf >> >>*Smile* >>Chris (list mom) >>http://www.alittleolfactory.com
