I like to include what I call idiot warnings on my lotions and such.

Especially the EXTERNAL USE ONLY. I'd probably sell no product if I put what I

really wanted to put on the bottles for idiot warnings like .... Just cause

you're

stupid enough to eat this doesn't mean I should be responsible. :-)

How do those of you who make and sell handmade toiletries feel about

including such phrases as;

ADULT USE ONLY

USE ONLY AS DIRECTED

IF IRRITATION DEVELOPS, DISCONTINUE USE

EXTERNAL USE ONLY

on the labels of your products for sale?

Does anyone know if this is an FDA labeling law? Or is it just more for

liability issues?

Christy,

I personally use information similar to what you

have above. I consider it a part of my safety

program and my insurance company insisted on some

safety warnings before they would issue my

policy.

On all of my blends I place the following:

Keep away from eyes and muscous membranes. Do

skin patch test by applying small amount on the

inside of elbow. If burning, irritation or

redness occur discontinue use.

I also list ALL my ingredients including every

last essential oil because I have run across

people who are allergic to such essential oil of

lemon, grapefruit and even eucalyptus.

So I agree with such listings wholeheartedly. I

have read the FDA labeling requirements and to be

honest I just don't remember what they say about

labeling.

It's a good idea for some warnings that are appropriate to each product. If

you are selling handmade products that have not been formally tested for

safety and such then you are required by the FDA to put the following on

your labels.

Warning: The safety of this product has not been determined.

>program and my insurance company insisted on some

>safety warnings before they would issue my

This is actually a must on products and they must be in order of

predominance.

See above warning statement. :)
