Don't get wrapped around the axle on the word " hyped " because it can be

used or misused depending on the point one wants to get across.

First .. read the above as " safety unknown " .. not unsafe. Secondly,

read Peppermint as " safety unknown " .. it too is not tested .. along

with a helluva lotta other oils.

Thirdly .. read Martin as merely expressing the position he has taken on

oils that have not been PROVEN safe .. and don't misinterpret his words

as meaning they are UNSAFE .. it would be unwise to read it that way.

> Does anyone know where this originated from?

Where what originated? The fact that E. smithii is mild? Probably from

the same sources of years and years of empirical observation that we now

understand the many fine uses of Peppermint. If those sources were full

of bull they were believable enough that zillions of folks believed them

long enough to find out for themselves .. and now those beliefs (whether

they were correct in the beginning or not) have been codified in the

minds of folks who have first hand experience in their use.

> Is it from herbal usage or just another aromatherapy myth?

The only myth is that an oil that has not been DERMALLY tested because

the damn cosmetics industry didn't want to make something from it is not

safe .. as I said, if we follow that line of thinking we might as well

get the hell out of AT and start buying the poison crap they sell in the

drug stores .. we know that most of it is unsafe.

None of the Eucalyptus oils are tested .. except Eucalyptus, Blue Gum

(Eucalyptus globulus) .. and it is GRAS .. used in the foods and flavor

industry.

Sylla's manual .. says .. about Eucalyptus smithii .. appears externally

non-toxic, non-irritant when diluted .. non sensitizing .. EXTREMELY

GENTLE .. best for children and sensitive persons. All Eucalyptus are

toxic when taken internally.

And it goes on to say .. Untested Oil .. Avoid use on sensitive or

damaged skin. Guess what .. that last sentence applies to tested oils

too .. it applies to ALL essential oils!!

I am not going to be concerned because some EO has not been formally

tested when it has been used for a long time. The testing is done by

trained knuckleheads using other knuckleheads to see if the tested

knuckleheads jump up and down and holler .. they do not follow up on

sensitization (probably) cause it could occur years later and the

knuckleheads who were tested were probably students who have moved on to

other lives in other places.

I become weary of hearing the cries of " wolf " all the time. Martin has

built his reputation on doing good research and on taking a very hard

stand on .. " If it ain't been tested .. it ain't supposed to be used. "

I think that's fine cause everybody has to believe in something .. but I

ain't buying it all the time! I think its fair that he wants to be true

to his modus operandi .. and he has to stick with that MO until the oil

is tested. But it does NOT mean that the oil is not safe.

If there is ONE PERSON on this list that has ever heard of a problem

from Eucalyptus smithii .. please tell us. I am not waiting for anyone

to step forward. If we look at the chemical profile of E. smithii we

see a.pinene, limonene, b. pinene, myrcene, b. phellandrene, paracymene,

1.8 cineole (high .. like Rosemary), a.terpineol, linalool, geraniol and

such .. wanna know how many tested EO have similar profiles .. a helluva

bunch of them do.

If we isolate some of these chemicals they might cause us problems ..

this is true for damn near any chemical found in nature .. but nature is

smart and sticks them all together in a manner where they are supportive

of each other .. its called a natural synergy .. and Martin has often

written that isolating a chemical from the whole oil and extrapolating

the good or the bad from it is dumb science .. I agree with him.

Yep .. and keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com

PS: Like I said .. everybody has to believe in something. I believe I

am gonna have around 4 fingers of Kahlua on the rocks and then hit the

sack early tonight .. its a bit after 1 in the morning here and today

was spent dealing with different kinds of gummit knuckleheads .. which

also makes we weary. ;-)
