Guest guest
Hi Virginia, > Hi Everyone, > Is there such a thing as Rose Geranium essential oil. Yes Virginia .. there is a Santa Claus .. and a Rose Geranium. ;-) Long, long ago .. I wrote a long post on this to this list .. but its in my other PC which is not operable now .. I'm still in the unpacking part of my move and there is as much left to do as I have already done. > I was told there is not, but suppliers are selling Rose geranium > -Pelargonium roseum -. Not surprising. One of the many reasons I look forward to retiring and getting out of this industry is because there is more misinformation, disinformation, urban rumor and marketing hype to be found here than in most any occupation I am aware of .. except maybe politics and counter intelligence. In those cases folks don't even try too hard to unwrap the commo wire from around the axle. When I quit I am gonna chase Largemouth Bass and Beach Bunnies and not worry about the hype. ;-) > Any of the experts care to comment. Many thanks. > > Virignia They haven't been born yet .. and when they are, the information we have today will be obsolete .. so they will have to start from Tabula Rasa. But I'll tell you what I know. And I'll fall back on but a teeny tiny tad of what Martin Watt has presented in his fine EO Monograph Series http://www.av-at.com/monographs.html I will NOT, however, use the info on Rose Geranium, found in Sylla's AT Practitioner Reference Manual http://www.av-at.com/manual01.html .. because .. its incorrect. That is not a knock on the manual .. its a helluva bit of fine work and the best compilation of data out and about today .. but there are some errors and those errors are based on erroneous information probably obtained from so-called experts. If one wants to criticize published works they might wanna start with two of the finest historical pubs in the world .. the Holy Bible and the Koran. Many wise scholars have told me that if it were possible to tweak some of facts in these fine works it would make life a lot easier for them whut must explain the inconsistencies. There are over 250 Species of Pelargonium in the Geraniaceae Family. Most of the essential oils are extracted from three of these Species; P. graveolens Heriter (Rose Pelargonium), P. capitatum (Wild Rose Pelargonium) and P. radens. From these three Species thousands of Varieties and Cultivars have been developed .. and that development continues .. it makes work for the botanists and farmers and such. As Martin says, this makes precise botanical naming of oils from the crops almost meaningless .. but afore y'all get frustrated, this also applies to DOZENS and DOZENS of other Species and even to some Families themselves .. what is is because science says it is .. and it will remain so until they decide to say it ain't! Which they do annually. The way to know what one has is to evaluate the chemical profile .. and this is what the experts do in ALL cases when they want to know what kind of Thyme, Rosemary, Oregano, Orange, Grapefruit, Frankincense, Myrrh and this and that and this and that .. oil is. In the Geraniums we are looking primarily at Geraniol, Citronellol and Linalool .. but many of the chemical components found in far lesser percentage .. and even those that are considered as trace chemicals, are also considered by the experts. In fact, what is and sometimes what ain't in there .. will often tell them something they wouldn't know if they had not paid close attention .. they do NOT go by odor alone. Can some of these chemicals be synthetically produced .. you can bet your bippy on that .. thus the need for an expert to make the call on if it is or if it ain't. Important to know is the Origin .. comparing the profiles according to Origin is critical as they are not all the same. Now lemme tell you why I disagree with the info in Sylla's Manual .. in it is a statement that some Rose Geranium is either Geranium distilled over Roses .. or Rose Otto mixed with Geranium. Say what? The price alone shows that to be incorrect. But she also lists P. roseum in the list of Pelargoniums. Sylla has often said that the many years of work she put into her manual was worth the effort .. and I agree .. but that if she had that many more years to work on it there would be a number of tweeks .. and this is the same case with any reference publication in existence .. including the Holy Books. Its not the messages we want to change, its the inconsistencies that're really not true inconsistencies but are confusing enough to get a novice's knickers in a knot. Martin notes that as early as 1857 Rose Geranium (Pelargonium roseum) was reported to be used in some circles to adulterate Rose Otto. See the contradiction? I was also told this by a professor here .. he said that it was quite common in old times to do this .. but keep in mind that the majority of the oil produced then (not too different now) was for the fragrance and food trades. Also keep in mind that the meaning of messages gets lost as they pass from one person to the next in an unregulated environment .. a good example is Rosemary, Cinole .. its claimed (and believes by some folks, even teachers who are too lazy to research the facts or too chicken to deviate from the common mistaken beliefs in this flaky industry) to be harmful to those who suffer from Epilepsy .. they should avoid it. The problem is .. they got the friggin message all wrong .. it was .. for centuries .. the TREATMENT for Epilepsy. It is NOT harmful!!!!!! Sorta reminds me of the tale about the Head Monk who was missing for a few days and later they found him in the cellar looking over the hand written archives that had been copied from originals many centuries before and copied exactly over and over ever since. He was looking at an original when they found him, and he was bawling his eyes out. The young Monks asked him why he was crying .. and the poor feller said, " Its Celebrate .. they left a letter out when they copied it. " ;-) So, yes Virginia .. there is a Rose Geranium. :-) Y'all keep smiling. Butch http://www.AV-AT.com PS: Many studies and therapeutic uses of Pelargoniums are covered in Martin's EO Monograph .. good info it is.
