In the most 'advanced' country on the planet,

approximantely 2 children's parents have chosen to

homeschool their children. The '2m' quote comes

from the Home School Legal Defence Association - and

it represents 1 in 25 students in the US today. The

most recent poll by the Department of Education put he

number closer to 850,000. It should be noted that

home schoolers tend to ignore government surveys, so

the HSLDA number is probably closer to the truth.

The market for teaching materials and supplies for

home schoolers is over $800m a year - and growing.

More than 3/4 of the universities in the US now have

policies for working with home schooled children.

There are support networks of home schoolers in

hundreds and towns and cities across the country.

In 1981, home schooling was illegal. Today, it is a

legal right in all 50 states. Twenty-eight states

require home schooled children undergo some kind of

official evaluation, either by taking standardized

tests or submitting a portfolio of work. Thirteen

states simply require parents to inform officals that

they are going to teah their children at home. Texas

doesn't require the parent to tell anyone anything.

The Patrick Henry College in suburban Virginia opened

in 2000. This conservative university has become the

most recent symbol of the home schooling movement.

Currently, it has about 250 students. Plans are to

expand the undergraduate school to 1600 and add a law

school of 400.

As mentioned before, read " Dumbing us Down " . It's a

good book. Many of my friends home school their

children. Two of my friends have autistic children

and have had excellent success with home schooling.

Get to know the people in your area who are involved

in home schooling. Networks are what makes this

work.

Good luck.

had to pass this on ... I just got off live help - ha! on YL - I wanted to know

where the lavendar came from - here's what they said:

We have a variety of vendors, and our vendors use both locations to grow the

plant (France and US). Unfortunately more specifics about the location of

growing or the altitude level of where they are grown is privileged vendor

information that we are not permitted to give

what a crock...told them so too

Blessings,

Pam
