The '2m' quote comes from the Home School Legal Defence Association - and it represents 1 in 25 students in the US today. The most recent poll by the Department of Education put he number closer to 850,000. It should be noted that home schoolers tend to ignore government surveys, so the HSLDA number is probably closer to the truth. The market for teaching materials and supplies for home schoolers is over $800m a year - and growing. More than 3/4 of the universities in the US now have policies for working with home schooled children. There are support networks of home schoolers in hundreds and towns and cities across the country. In 1981, home schooling was illegal. Today, it is a legal right in all 50 states. Twenty-eight states require home schooled children undergo some kind of official evaluation, either by taking standardized tests or submitting a portfolio of work. Thirteen states simply require parents to inform officals that they are going to teah their children at home. Texas doesn't require the parent to tell anyone anything. The Patrick Henry College in suburban Virginia opened in 2000. This conservative university has become the most recent symbol of the home schooling movement. Currently, it has about 250 students. Plans are to expand the undergraduate school to 1600 and add a law school of 400. As mentioned before, read " Dumbing us Down " . It's a good book. Many of my friends home school their children. Two of my friends have autistic children and have had excellent success with home schooling. Get to know the people in your area who are involved in home schooling. Networks are what makes this work.
