Guest guest
Hi Cheryl; It sounds as though you are having a lot of fun with the glass and making great progress! Congratulations! Glass is as addictive as soap and candle making, AT and herbs are. I have been involved with stained glass as my full time " day job " for over 30 years. GlassEye and Rapid Resizer are both great programs. Wish they had been around 30 years ago along with the computer and so many new tools that are now available! My hands are softer than most of my friends. I started making soaps , etc. about 5 years ago and found a noticeable change in my hands and skin in general. I wash my hands often throughout the day and use a lotion bar or balm after each wash.(Graham's balm sound wonderful! ) I also drink a lot of water during the day. I think dehydration plays a major role in skin condition. IN the shop I use those finger protectors for bank tellers that one can find at office supply stores. I have a double set for index and thumb of each hand and use them for grinder and ring saw. If I am cleaning , applying copper sulfate or grouting a leaded piece, I wear a double layer of disposable glove and a dust mask. I don't know if any of those chemicals are absorbable through the skin. I don't want to know. I know they are harsh. I find exposure to moisture from the grinder does the most damage to my hands and nails. I try not to grind a lot or for too long a period of time.. That seems also to help. If I have to have my hands in water for any length of time, I use gloves; either the tight fitting latex ones or regular kitchen gloves. I have an aloe plant in the studio and also keep a bottle of Lavender Eo handy for those minor burns one can get from spitting solder. Also please make sure you use good eye protection. hope this helps. If not, let us know what you are doing specifically so that we can offer more suggestions. nancy B in MD
Guest guest
Hey Nancy B, This was perfect and exactly what I was looking for. I ordered some of Graham & Lynda's balm. I have a wonderful lotion but it doesn't seem to do the trick. I drink a case of pint bottles of water a week by myself but my meds dehydrate me anyway and increasing the water would flood out my organs. Or so my primary care physician says. He actually wants me to cut back. So yes dehydration plays an important role in my skin care. I will be picking up some of the finger protectors today when I am out and about. I have been using double disposable gloves after I realized singles were not doing the trick. It is the thumb and forefinger that are causing me the problems so what you have suggested should take care of it. I am really glad to see that I am on the right track. For eye protection I am wearing my safety goggles over my glasses also the face protector is always on my grinder.
