Guest guest
Hey Kathleen! I have to come out of lurkdom for this! My name is Paris Mickle, (pronounced Michael). I have a small home business where I teach people (mostly the homeschooling crowd) how to make natural cleaning products and other things at home. I also sell EO's as well as some other products made by stay-at-home/homeschooling families here in Las Vegas. I want to also squeeze in that I absolutley love this group! A great thank you to Chris for keeping such an awesome group together! And a big hello to Butch! HELLO! And also Martin Watt, my professor! I homeschool my 11yo daughter and always have. She has never gone to " school " and is a wonderful person and very intelligent (of course! I am her mother after all!) We have been on many learning paths over the years and have come to settle on the unschooling one. Of course there are many ways to learn AND teach. Here are some my best resources for homeschooling info. This book is great for understanding the way your child best learns things. Discover Your Child's Learning Style by Mariaemma Willis, MS & Victoria Kindle Hodson, MA Any articles or books by John Holt: " How Children Learn " " How Children Fail " Home Education Magazine (past issues in library) (latest issue in Natural food stores eg. Wild Oats, Whole Foods) HEM also has a web site. Any articles or books by John Taylor Gatto www.johntaylorgatto.com Jan Hunt's web has been my favorite child advocacy site since mine was 4. She has many articles on homeschooling on her site. Also, her son was home/un-schooled and is now grown. www.naturalchild.com If you do choose homeschooling you may also want to look into " de-schooling " There are thousands of homeschooling sites and there are also quite a few really cool and some very nice sounding homeschooling groups in the bay area. A homeschooling conference called the LINK in Southern CA and from what I hear a fantastic conference in Sacramento every August. When we first started to homeschool I was very unsure and scared about weather or not I would do it right. I felt very insecure when anyone asked me anything about what I was doing. Once I found support in my area and began learning more about homeschooling and talking to other homeschoolers (there are more than 2000 of us in the LVarea) there was nothing anyone could say that would make me feel that this was not the right choice for my family and especially my daughter. No matter what you choose to do though Kathleen, it will be the right choice, because no one, including your childs teachers, knows what is best for your daughter except you and your daughter and those in your immediate family! I say immediate family because you may be surprised to find that very few people including those closest to you will initially, and maybe never, support you if you do choose to homeschool. It is unfamilliar...and we all know how most people respond to things they know nothing about! I do want to write more, but my daughter has all ready set up our chess game and poured the milk on my cereal hoping to lure me away quickly! It is working, because I hate soggy cereal! Maybe that is a good thing! LOL! Well, good luck in whatever you decide! Love, Paris Mickle~The Lily Cupboard
