Hi Chris and all,

I don't want to add to the controversy - or beat a dead horse. But

this struck a chord in me and I feel compelled to say one small thing.

I have a sister who is overweight, and for some reason people feel the

need to come up to her and tell her alllll sorts of things. Like " why

are you eating that muffin fatty, you should be eating carrots!!! "

I've been witness to it, I've seen this kind of cruelty, so when she

told me the latest, I was not surprised.

Apparently, someone recently thought it was necessary to approach my

sister in public, and tell her that he was NOT happy that he would

ultimately be paying for healthcare for her and her " problem. " He

went on to say (and I am paraphrasing) that she was a burden on

society (um, never mind she has and pays for her own healthcare) and

that people like her should quit shovelling fattening food into their

fat faces and start exercising. <ugh>

Never mind that my sister has a history of sexual abuse and for years

used her weight to keep people and intimacy at a distance. Never mind

that she's been through years of counceling to deal with this. Never

mind that she has realized her weight is a health issue - and an

intimacy issue, and has started watching what she eats (checked

herself into the Duke Health and fitness program twice - it ain't

cheap) and exercising. He never asked what was in her heart or mind -

therefor, didn't know.

Way before this, she started walking on the beach every day, goes to

the gym, has lost a considerable amt. of weight - hell, she's more

physically fit these days than I am. People STILL feel compelled to

tell her she's what is wrong with society, she needs to quit eating

junk, and that she's killing herself, has no self-control etc.

BUT - weight has not dulled her intelligence or wit - and when said

idiot confronted her about this, she calmly turned to him and asked

him if it was " correct " that SHE should be the one to pay for all the

environmental damage that his HUMMER was causing - and that neither

her, nor anyone like her should have to pay for the eventual

environmental damamge of SUVs, or people who don't recycle - or give a

rat's a** about global warming.

So, my point in retelling this story is that we all need to have more

compassion for our fellow (wo)man - you just DON'T know how they got

where they are or why, but a little bit of compassion would make the

world MUCH better for us all.

My other small point is that none of us acts or lives without impact

on others, we are all - like it or not, entertwined on this small

planet. So yeah, more compassion and education is needed.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming....

Jen,

Your sister's story made me think of EFT -- you can learn about it at

www.emofree.com -- it is amazing and may be just the thing to help your

sister be secure with herself.
