Guest guest
Hey Pat, > Butch, I drive 1/2 hour to work and that's not but about 10 miles. When I lived in Hotlanta .. actually, in Conyers .. 43 miles out of Hotlanta .. but around Hotlanta everybody says they are from Hotlanta kinda like folks do around D.C. Anyway .. that 43 mile drive up GA 20 onto I-20 then onto I-285 would take around 40 minutes or so cause the only reason a person would drive less than the speed limit on I-20 and I-285 would be if they wanted to save gas .. get sucked along in the jetstream then. > Would take at LEAST an hour away from the city to really be country > around Houston. And then in rush " hour " it would be more like 2 hrs > to work, which is why we've not been able to move " out " yet. Yep .. Houston is one of the major bottlenecks in the USA now .. see http://www.cnn.com/2004/TRAVEL/02/19/bottleneck.study/index.html And .. if I lived in that area I would stay home during the peak hours. I know all folks can't .. but I can. > Wonder if we'll be too old to enjoy the rural lifestyle if we ever > get there? Heck no .. back home in Todd Country, KY things haven't changed a lick since I-24 came through 13 miles away .. they could make a Lost World movie about Guthrie, KY today. The same fields and hills and woods and creeks and gullies I used as my playground growing up are still there and the farms are still farms .. you go 15-20 minutes away to catch fish if you don't mind pond fish .. want a deer you go approximately the same distance and time. Its around a 15 minute drive from Clarksville, TN and Fort Campbell, KY .. but that 15 minutes is through farmlands and woods and such. And we are around 40 minutes from Nashville, TN. Lots of places down south are still unspoiled but out west .. especially in New Mexico .. you can drive for hours without seeing anything but a few wild critters. I drove from Silver City to the Gila National Forest in September and saw not one other car .. and I was up around 7,000 feet breathing clean air .. beautiful country that is. > Pat (in the big city) I live in Ankara .. population 3 million .. but its a very small city as we don't go to many areas and the areas we go to are pretty concentrated into one location .. a 10 minute taxi ride max from here to there. But in Istanbul, population 13 + million and on two continents .. life is not easy. Takes 2 hours to cross the city and that's when there is not a lot of traffic. Reminds me a bit of L.A. except its a lot safer .. not near as wild as L.A. ;-) Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com >>As for me .. when I retire-retire .. or maybe even before then, I > > plan to live a rural lifestyle. Driving a half hour to the city is > my kind of living. Butch
