Guest guest
Hey Sherlene, > 63% (Dixie). A definitive Southern score! Sho'nuf is .. considering that the test was a bit loaded. ;-) > I'm from around Houston, TX, was born in Conroe, Tx, never have lived > any place else. On my daddy's side, my ancestor, Aaron Cherry, Sr. was > the 1st permanent white settlement in the state of Texas in 1819. (No, > Stephen F. Austin wasn't the 1st!) My mother's people are from Mississippi. Folks can't get no more Suthran than Mis'sippi .. and no more Texican than you are. > However, I have had years of voice lessons (started signing in public at > age 3) and they darn-near stripped the drawl right out of me! That's probably what you think .. but probably not so. I go back home and folks say I done started tawking Yankee .. I go away from home and folks immediately know I'm from the South .. and I've not lived in the USA for sixteen years now. Fact is, except for writing on this list and replying to folks off list .. I rarely use English. And writing does nothing to maintain or cause loss of an accent. ;-) > I really am 100% Suthern. And, I AM kin to Robert E. Lee, that's my > mamma's maiden name! Good show .. good stock .. and congratulations. Being kin to Robert E. Lee also makes you kin to Martha Washington and .. Robert E. Lee is from a line of Scottish nobility .. to include kings .. not all bad methinks http://www.civilwarhome.com/leeancestors.htm Lee's biography http://www.civilwarhome.com/leebio.htm begins with a letter to his sister .. explaining his decision why he can not stay in the Army of the United States of America. More important is the fact that Robert E. Lee was anti-slavery .. and he stated, in 1856, " There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil. " http://www.civilwarhome.com/leepierce.htm contains Lee's feelings about slavery. But Jefferson Davis .. President of the Confederacy .. whose monument, similar too but a bit shorter than the Washington Monument, is in my home county of Todd County, KY .. was also anti-slavery. Contrary to a lot of twisted history the War of Secession was NOT about slavery .. no question it was an issue that needed to be resolved .. but it was NOT the cause of the war nor did patriotic and gallant Suthran folks flock to join the Confederate Army to protect that institution. > As my ol' buddy says, " Ya'll keep smilin'! " > Sherlene Right you are on that one. :-) Butch
