Guest guest
Had a friend ask about using jojoba, olive oil, or a similar (natural) carrier oil as a lubricant while using condoms. Doing some research, I found that it is the petroleum base of oil based lubricants that causes breakdown of the latex in the condom. Her question, which I'm not sure of the answer yet, LOL, is, would using a natural oil such as a carrier oil cause the latex to breakdown. Can anyone point me in a good direction to find this answer for her? Thanks! Keisha
Guest guest
Personally, I wouldn't use oils of any type with a condom. There are many excellent water based lubricants on the market aside from KY jelly, which can get sticky as it dehydrates. Guest guest
According to the AIDS Committee of Toronto Resource Centre - " Sixty seconds of exposure to mineral oil (in baby oil and hand lotion) caused a 90% decrease in the strength of condoms in one study. Even if a condom doesn't break, oil can cause microscopic holes in latex that are big enough for a virus to pass through.... .... another study tested the effect of a bunch of things on latex condoms and found no difference between different types of oils (mineral, vegetable or animal). This study showed that , while glycerin had no effect, rubbing alcohol also had a bad effect on latex - which includes diaphragms as well as condoms. Guest guest
My question would be, do you really want to put oil in THERE? The reason lubricants are water based is so they can come out/break down/dissipate, however they go away. Oil is another situation. I would think there could be a whole slew of new problems with oil remaining on the vaginal walls. I'd want to know that what's up with that first, then move on to the condom question. 2004...More, More, More! ~~~Shelley~~~ There is M~O~R~E for me in 2004! Guest guest
Well thanks everyone that responded to my questions. I'm glad that I can honestly say " Don't use that with a condom. " and be able to tell her WHY!
