Help for a friend...

Well, after all the questions I've asked lately...I am reluctant to pose one

more for fear of " wearing out my welcome " . >:o)

However, my best friend called me late last night...during our conversation,

she mentioned that she was suffering with an outbreak of genital herpes. She

said she has a problem with the antiviral drugs that the doctor wants to

give her...something about some kind of reaction to them. Anyway, she knows

that I study alternative therapies and was wondering if I knew of anything

that could help her. Her doctor apparently said that it would run its course

without meds, but the meds would help the symptoms. Right now, she is in

misery.

Does anyone have any suggestions!

Thanks so much! Kati

Olive Leaf capsules are antiviral. I'm sure someone else will have

more ideas!

Hi Katy!

I can't speak to genital herpes, but I do get the cold sores on my

lips - and that's the same type of virus.

I know that a major trigger for me is STRESS or illness. So when I

feel like a situation may be coming on that will weaken my immune

system or stress me out, I load up on lysine (2000mg twice a day or

more) and vitamin C. The lysine really helps shorten the outbreeak

time, and if taken early enough, can stave it off. When I get the

cold sore, I use heli/chamomile Co2 in rosehip oil and a touch of mint

(for the pain) when the skin is intact. When a scab forms, I switch

to unrefined shea butter lip balm.

Before the actual outbreak, it's likely one will get " prodrome " which

is a pain or tingling along the nerve route that the virus lives on.

For me, I feel pain and tingling on one side of my face, and in my

ear. Also, the lymph node under my jaw gets sore. I have a friend

with genital herpes and she says her knee and hamstring area hurt, and

her groin area lymph nodes swell. This is the BEST time to catch it

and start loading up on the lysine or anti-virals. It's possible to

stave off an outbreak at this point. Your friend can try to pinpoint

when she's getting prodrome and start treatment then.

My DH bought me some melissa from Norfolk Essential Oils in England

for Christmas. I haven't had the opportunity to try it out for a cold

sore yet. My thoughts on this are that since it is a potential

irritant, it might be better for inhalation during an outbreak than

topical application. But someone better versed in EO safety and

efficacy may want to comment more on this. She can always try to

drink lots of Lemon Balm tea.

I tried really hard to not respond to the AUT or urine bathing comment

in the info someone else posted - but I just can't stop myself! LOL!

Urine is a WASTE product, and even in a healthy person is filled with

bacteria and toxins. I'd think twice about bathing any infected area

with it. Whew! there - I feel better!

Good Luck - and I hope your shoulder is feeling better!

Thanks for the suggestions, Jen and everyone! I was thinking some of the

same things myself. I wll pass on the info to my friend. On top of the

physical pain, she is in emotional turmoil simply because of the type of

infection...stress is a trigger for her, so this is kind of a vicious cycle

since she stresses herself out when an outbreak occurs. I will definitely

tell her about the lysine..seems I heard something about that a doctor's

office sometime...maybe that will help break the cycle!

Thanks for thinking of me Jen! My shoulder is doing much better today! I

think my hour in Yoga yesterday really helped to work that knot out. Can I

say again how MUCH I LOVE yoga?!?! >:oD

Have a great day everyone!

Always in faith, Kati

A few things about herpes -

Just before an outbreak, when you get that " tingling " (and not in a good way,

either! :-( feeling, take aspirin - it is suppose to mitigate the outbreak.

Taking St. John's Wort will help, because it helps with the effects of stress,

and is anti-viral. I take St. John's wort in the winter months (can't in the

spring & summer because it makes one photosensitive - and since I am a lighter

shade of pale, bad combination :-) and I just don't get colds. Good stuff.

I have heard Melissa is suppose to work, and Teatree is an anti-viral...but I

don't know about applying it neat to the genital area - a tab more tingling than

I want to experience! I have seen it used on cold sores with success, though.

Blessings,

Doreen
