Guest guest
I have been thinking about this and since I don't have any personal expericene with using onions, this is just an educated (???) guess. But I would go for making an oil infusion with it, in some good nourishing oils - like wheatgerm and olive? Since I live in such a cold climate, solar infusions is not easily done, so here is what I do: I put the material in a glass jar with a screw on lid, pour the oil of choise over it so the material is completely covered and some more. Screw on the lid and put it in a water bath (the water level should be up to just under the lid of the jar) and bring the heat up slowly - then let it steep there on low heat for 3-4 hours. I always put somthing like a canning ring in the bottom of the pan, so that the jar's bottom doesn't get to hot (and scorche the material). Let the whole thing cool down, still with the lid on and then strain it, poor into dark glass bottle and store away from heat and light. After writing this, it struck me - I absolutely don't know if the working agent's in the onion is destroyed by heat - anyone else knows? If so - skip the whole heating thing and just let it sit in the jar and change the material if needed. Hope this helped in any way. I keep mine " steeping " for 2 or 3 days. Works great. -Helen I have been thinking about this and since I don't have any personal expericene with using onions, this is just an educated (???) guess. Guest guest
Didn't make myself clear, Michael. I put whatever herb I am wanting to infuse in olive oil PACKED in a pint jar. Fill to the top with oil, cap it good and tight and place the jar in my crockpot full of water. Turn it on and let it simmer away. I keep adding water to keep it nice and high on the outside of the jar. After 2 or 3 days the herbs are crispy and the oild infused. Thought one could use the same process with onions . . . -Helen , " Steven Allensworth " <worth249@e...> wrote: > I do this only use my crock pot. Set it on low and keep the water level high .. . .. Guest guest
Thank you Candy ! Now I understand. Geez, I thought with all the talk, someone needed to make onion soup and didn't know how, LoL. Until, that is, I saw the talk about the oil infusing. What benefits do you think it will have for this ? I make tons of infusions and salves for healing but haven't heard of this usage yet. If you don't mind letting me know, I would love to hear what its benefits might be in a salve. Thank you, Jenn - C.
