I think any time folks are sticking their fingers into something it raises the chance of introducing bacteria and contaminating it (whether it contains water or not Maybe putting the gel into the type of bottle that has a wide mouth and comes with a cosmetic spatula attached to the cap could help solve that problem. In my experience, if the spatula is attached to the top like that people are more likely to remember to use it instead of a spatula that just comes along with the product, but is not attached to a jar.
