( almost fell off tha seawall in Palm Beach, lol) Luckily, i had a friend ,who was into herbs and herbal remedies, who worked at a health food store. She turned me on to a product called " Femtrol " which is still being distributed today ( this was back in the 70's) I started taking 2 tabs-4times a day for the first 2 weeks to get them under control, then backed off to 2 twice a day and continued taking them for 15 years. I have never taken any kind of Estrogen replacement, just these herbal tablets and i have to say they worked very well for me. I have since then reacommended them to many of my friends, all of whom have had great sucess with them if they stick with them. Since i'm well through the monopause, THANK GOD, lol, i no longer take them but some of the herbs in them are the ones recommended for female reproduction health. ie, Chaste Berry, False Unicorn, Licorish ( sorry about tha spelling) to mention a few. It also contained the herb the Chinese recommend which is Dong Quai. They also kept all the other symptoms under wraps. I used to wake up in the morning and feel like i wanted to kill someone, lol, even if it was me! Hope this helps you some. Chinese Herbs and Acupuncture are wonderful modalities for gynecological imbalances, including menopausal symptoms, however, it is very important to have a diagnostic session with a practitioner to see what pattern is being expressed. There are several different imbalances that may cause hot flashes depending on individual constitution. What herbal formula that works for one person's constitutional pattern, may not work for another's and in fact may be counterproductive. Most states of the US have practitioners. You can look at www.gancao.net and many other places on the web for referrals. Hope this helps, Christina, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac Denver, Colorado SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool. Guest guest
Hey all, I have found that taking 2 Borage oil capsules daily (you can find them in health food stores) has helped me tremendously with hot flashes. It takes effect within two weeks of beginning the regime. Everyone that I have told this to, and have taken the Borage oil, is very pleased. Also, Borage is reportedly beneficial for your heart, skin, nerves and moods! Guest guest
Deonia and All, Sorry, if I was not clear. I did NOT mean any criticism of Deonia's post. What I posted was just for general information as I am painfully aware of the damage that can be done with an improperly prescribed Chinese herbal formula (and possibly same with a western herbal formula, I just don't know western herbs). When I was a student and just beginning, I caused myself a number of uncomfortable " side effects " with formulas that did not take into account all my own particular constitutional features. (And I am particularly sensitive, so now years later, it's still very difficult for me to find a good formula that won't cause unwanted " side effects " .) Whenever I am in Whole Foods or Wild Oats or stores like them, I cringe to hear the staff directing someone to a particular herb or formula when I can just *look* at the person and tell it's probably going to give them problems, and sometimes I suspect BIG problems. And I often wonder if they connect the likely problems with the herb, or if they just keep taking the herb(s). Whenever Chinese herbs and/or *especially formulas* and amateurs are involved, I get worried because the paradigm governing the prescription is so VERY different from ours (in the West). I cannot see how someone without more than a passing familiarity with the diagnostics of Chinese herbal medicine can use them without problems. I even worry about the implications I can think of with Western herbal formulas and products based on what I know about Chinese Herbs. For instance, usually oils, such as the borage mentioned on a previous post on this thread or soy, is a great idea, but if someone has " Qi stagnation " esp of the Liver System, then such a " rich " product as an oil, or a " rich " herb might cause even MORE " stagnation " that in turn creates more " heat " thereby making the hot flashes much WORSE instead of better. So in that case, you have to use cooling and moving herbs along with the " rich " herbs/oils to avoid the problems while getting the benefits. And that's just one instance. All that said, I feel all people need to be empowered to take control of their own health to the highest level possible. And so along with advocating going to a practitioner for people who do not have a lot of education in these instances, I highly advocate educating yourself with all the wonderful resources out on the market today. Healing With Whole Foods by Pritchford is a great place to start as in Chinese Medicine, foods have the same functions as herbs. Sorry to run on so, I hope this helps rather than making it more confusing.
