Guest guest Posted January 28, 2004 Report Share Posted January 28, 2004 OK, I am going to be a geek for a minute (well, probably more!) and tell you more about this, b/c my masters is in elementary ed, and I am a Reading Recovery trained teacher who trained teachers in how to teach reading and wiritng to their kids. That is, before I burned out and decided to stay home and make soap, LOL! Although I still do private tutoring b/c I miss the kids! But for the very reason you are saying, that is why we need to teach kids to read using meaning and structural cues instead of just phonics and " sounding it out " -- although they need that, too, just balanced strategies. Isn't it neat to know how your mind works when it takes in messages contained in print!? This is one of the first tid bits I would share with my teachers, so that they would look at how to teach reading in a different way. I hope it was anyway. Folks don't work for nothing .. leastways .. not in the universities. ;-p But grants are nothing but Big Brother giving back what Big Brother took away in the first place .. it keeps smart folks employed and from time to time .. the tidbits and trivia they pick up, when coupled with other tidits and trivia from other funded research projects .. winds up being the basis for important discoveries.
