Dorothy,

When I got into soapmaking I found the books weren't as helpful as talking

to others online through email lists. There is quite a few soapmaking email

lists out there. I can tell you of a few of em, just email me. Also I found

there is quite a few sites that detail some great ways to make soap. I can

look those up if you like. As for books I liked:

The Soap makers Companion by Susan Miller Cavitch

The Natural Soap Book: Making Herbal and Vegetable-Based Soaps

by Susan Miller Cavitch

Essentially Soap by Robert S., Dr. McDaniel

Making Transparent Soap: The Art of Crafting, Molding, Scenting & Coloring

by Catherine Failor

Making Natural Liquid Soaps by Catherine Failor

There are other books than this but these were the basics and I thought as

thorough as you could get.

I think I researched soapmaking for three months before I finally took the

plunge! I Wanted to make sure I knew exactly what I was doing before I made

any. But it is such a neat hobby, and great to have your own homemade soap.

(WARNING: Making your own soap is completely addictive and can lead to other

addictions such as lotion and balm making, creams.. and eventually even

Candle making! :)
