Guest guest
Happy New Year's Eve everyone, I hope y'all are getting ready for the wheel of time to roll over another year! Yesterday hubby was diagnosed with a kidney stone and accompanying infection. He is now (much to his dismay)on a strict kidney cleansing diet consisting of mostly fresh fruits, veggies, distilled water and not much else, and several herbal preparations to assist the dissolving and passing of the stone and to clear/flush the infection (the hospital gave him a super strong Cipro Rx and after an extensive consultation with our regular doctor last night, Philip Incao, we've decided to not fill that). I told him all that Mountain Dew, coffee and candy was going to catch up with him, but noooooo, nobody listens to me - they know best .. ::: grumble grumble ::: Maybe when I finally get my big ol' degree in holistic nutrition and naturopathy and have that PhD and N.D. after my name (which I will one day!) I'll get some respect and I won't have to always be like " I told you so " ! So now I get to give him bloody hell about it, and I'm good at that ;-p Anyway .... this has set me back a day further in my schedule as yesterday was a " wasted day " for me as far as work goes ... Just keeping y'all informed! *Smile* Chris (list mom - who instead of making the extravagant New Year's Eve supper I was going to tonight will make a more modest, yet still yummy, Japanese style Vegetable Noodle Bowl and Miso Soup for supper) http://www.alittleolfactory.com

Hi Chris: what herbs are you recommending for him? I would recommend combining tinctures of goldenrod and queen anne's lace seed, and teas of burdock seed, cornsilk, plantain, marshmallow and cleavers. They all have different functions, some will help dissolve or at least 'take the edge' off the stones, making them easier to pass, others sooth tissues, and others help battle the infection. You could use a little goldenseal (which I rarely recommend due to its endangered status, but only until the infection clears up.) Will your doctor allow him to have raw garlic (you could make a yummy Vietnamese dip, or salsa.) >I told him all that Mountain Dew, coffee and candy was going to catch up >with him, but noooooo, nobody listens to me - they know best .. ::: >grumble grumble ::: Maybe when I finally get my big ol' degree in >holistic nutrition and naturopathy and have that PhD and N.D. after my >name (which I will one day!) So now I get to give him bloody hell >about it, and I'm good at that ;-p Chris, try to get a historical perspective on this -- kidney stones were much more prevelant centuries ago, and old herbals are rife with KS treatments. Often, it is caused by a low-grade gall bladder infection " cooking down " the bile, which then precipitates into stones. We now believe that the infection, combined with not enough water intake, can be a big cause of KS. Also, folks who OD on calcium supplements and milk products may be susceptible. So don't go blaming his sugar and cola jones, 'cause if that was the truth, there would be an epidemic of KS in America, and there isn't. Obesity, yes, but not KS. Is he in pain? Those KS can be scary pain, sending people to the ER in the middle of the night. Last Dec., a friend who was on Atkins had that experience -- too much protein, too little water, maybe the underlying infection = ER fun and games. And you *know* he wasn't downing Mountain Dew and candy! Now go lay a little 'sugar' on him, future ND, 'cause bedside manner can help people heal up faster than herbs 'n things, y'know. Let me know how he's doing and I hope he's feeling better soon. http://member.newsguy.com/~herblady
Guest guest
Sincerely hope the dissolving of the stone will help the passing of it. I ran this agenda by my doctor, who is an anthroposophic physician (an M.D. who is also well trained as a naturopath in the arts of herbology, homeopathy and nutrition). We agreed on a combination of uva ursi, marshmallow, madder, hydrangea, meadowsweet (gravel root), burdock, and horseradish in tincture form (the last 5 being a preparation available from Herb Pharm). Also the goldenseal for the infection, horsetail tea and LOTS and LOTS of distilled water. > I would recommend combining > tinctures of goldenrod and queen anne's lace seed, and teas of burdock > seed, cornsilk, plantain, marshmallow and cleavers. You could use a little goldenseal (which > I rarely recommend due to its endangered status, but only until the > infection clears up.) Will your doctor allow him to have raw garlic (you > could make a yummy Vietnamese dip, or salsa.) He just wants him at the moment to avoid most protein, starches and all processed foods. There are also some veggies that are not advisable, such as cooked spinach, chard, etc ... This is just a temporary cleansing diet. He'll be able to eat like a " normal person " again real soon, and just make a few adjustments from there. >I told him all that Mountain Dew, coffee and candy was going to catch up >with him, but noooooo, nobody listens to me - they know best .. ::: >grumble grumble ::: Maybe when I finally get my big ol' degree in >holistic nutrition and naturopathy and have that PhD and N.D. after my >name (which I will one day!) We now > believe that the infection, combined with not enough water intake, can be a > big cause of KS. Yes, he had that problem too, but kidney stones have become a bigger issue in the US post WWII and are also directly related to diet (very much including the lack of enough water). > Also, folks who OD on calcium supplements and milk > products may be susceptible. So don't go blaming his sugar and cola jones, > 'cause if that was the truth, there would be an epidemic of KS in America, > and there isn't. Obesity, yes, but not KS. I blame his cheese addiction too ;-p But not everyone is going to have a kidney stone from poor dietary choices. Some folks will get one ailment while others will get another. But things like kidney stones are directly related to dietary issues. > Is he in pain? Those KS can be scary pain, sending people to the ER in the > middle of the night. He did have a scary pain yesterday, that is why he went to the ER about it, but thankfully hasn't had any pain since. > Last Dec., a friend who was on Atkins had that > experience -- too much protein, too little water, maybe the underlying > infection = ER fun and games. And you *know* he wasn't downing Mountain Dew > and candy! Nope, but he also had unhealthy dietary issues going on. I think that Atkins diet is a horrible fad. Its not just one bad food habit that can do it, that is for certain. But that lack of water is a horrible thing. And drinking soda, and coffee, etc .. puts less water in your body, which leads to more chance of dehydration problems such as these. > Now go lay a little 'sugar' on him, future ND, 'cause bedside manner can > help people heal up faster than herbs 'n things, y'know.
