Guest guest
Butch, As you know I have been on many list for years. Still I enjoyed the Political Incorrect. The below is such a true statement. Having lived outside the US, I know how very lucky we are. Your whole letter sure said it all. No need to put it all here. You wrote a long but good one. >Americans need to live outside America for a few years in order to be >able to see how lucky we are to be Americans .. and to understand how >important it is to keep America American! >Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch Just another Damn Yankee LOL Nancy

Guest guest
My Fellow Americans .. and other good folks .. ;-p The subject above is not as true as some folks give it credit for being, and in my case, I know I'm not a fool nor reluctant to express opinions that I believe in and also believe are agreed with by many more people than are willing to step forward and be counted. It is not out of boredom that I decided to write this post. Its because (1) we saw some responses in reply to someone's post that basically said lets keep America American and let those who want to be Americans adapt to the established norms. Then someone objected to the inclusion of the words Christianity or Under God or whatever ..and that, today, is seen ny some who hang just left of the center as Politically Correct behavior. But I've not seen comments about the totally asinine decision to allow a woman in Florida to take a photo for her driver's license while wearing a veil because she was a Moslem. To comment on that would NOT be seen by the same folks as Politically Correct Behavior. As a retired police offer I can see the danger in allowing Moslems to do this but that's not the point of my post. The Koran does NOT require it but a person demanded it and the system saw fit to allow it. And any Moslem on the list who wants to argue this with me please bring it off list .. but come well prepared because I have read the Koran in English and was married to a Moslem for 21 plus years, and have spent more than 1/3 of my adult life in Moslem countries. The second reason I decided to write this was .. I sent a funny post to the list on Politically Correct Holiday Parties .. a post I have sent to many lists since 1996 or so; a post others will send to many lists this year. But this is the FIRST TIME that not one person has made a single comment about it. I'm not looking for praises for a great joke because its a very old joke and probably 90% + of the folks who've been on lists for a few years have seen it. What bothered me a little bit was that I believed and still believe that the joke, entitled Politically Correct ... was seen by some who think they are in a position to make such judgment, as being NOT Politically Correct. But that alone did not bother me .. what they think means far less to me than what left wing extremists like the idiot married to another idiot, named Clinton .. or the right wing hard core Christian con artists like Pat Robertson and his type folks think. It would bother me if perhaps the folks who did think it was funny .. and in the spirit of the season were reluctant to say so because they might fear they would be attacked by others who felt it was out of line. I KNOW that America is a unique and special country and BELIEVE this has nothing to do with Americans being better or worse individuals than the folks in other countries .. it has to do with the HOW and from WHENCE we came, as well as the WHY we are as we are. No Nation on Earth .. save one (in some peripheral areas) shares a history similar to ours. That exception is not now as it was when it was established .. that exception is Liberia. I won't bore folks with the details of HOW and from WHENCE and WHY we are unique because those who know American history don't need the details .. and those who don't know the details won't learn them here because this list is not about American history. BUT .. I BELIEVE America has made some wrong turns in some areas and I BELIEVE that certain political groups have succeeded in creating an impression that Right is Wrong and what's left is Left which is Right. If we lean Right we must be slobbering, ignorant, bigoted, rednecks who chew tobacco, beat our wives and have inoperable appliances in our front yards. But if we can succeed in being accepted by those who lean Left ... or those who claim to do so philosophically but not always in practice, then we can can join them in their elitist, smug condemnations of all that America has become in the last 227 + years of heroic growth. And .. those who understand American history will recall that with the exception of improved labor conditions in the US .. few improvements in the life of Americans can be traced to liberal ideals. In fact, the majority of them are directly related to right leaning industrialists .. and I will only mention the transcontinental railroad systems that were built in spite of efforts of the liberals to halt the construction. We should not make the mistake of failing to give this one single endeavor credit for massive evolutionary changes in the lives of Americans in days past .. changes we benefit from still today. No historian will claim that the Civil War was a war of Right against Left .. I've seen a few people try to do that and all they accomplished was proving that they knew exactly nothing about the events leading up to, or during, or following that dark period of American history. So .. aside from dumb rightist crap and enlightened leftist crap we'll find that our history supports few emotional arguments of revolutionary social change in America having long-lasting value .. but there is one exception I will touch on. That exception was really a hastening of events that were on the way to becoming anyway .. and likely (say many socialists) did not effectively deal with the real problems .. that exception was the movement for equal rights for black Americans led by Dr. Martin Luther King. The problems were such that mere creation of new laws to protect rights of minorities could not guarantee them .. the problems were institutional racism and the laws could not effectively deal with this. But after a period of time I like to call social evolution, we see that its hard to find more than a handful of educated people today who truly believe that a man is inferior due to his race or color. So education is the real solution! Back to group behavior on lists. Unfortunately, many folks associate Aromatherapy and other alternative healing modalities with New Age, and this (I think) causes SOME of the people who flock to such lists to feel a need to subordinate their TRUE feelings in order to be accepted by the masses .. or what they think are the masses. The comical part is that we can feel a need to blow smoke up the butts of other folks who are likewise feeling the same need to blow smoke up ours .. and because we aren't open and honest with each other on a list we think is populated by folks who think differently than we do .. we will never get to learn what other folks are thinking and the smoke blowing continues until it becomes a norm rather than an exception to the norm. I BELIEVE that if a secret poll was held on most any Aromatherapy list and it could be controlled so that list members get only one vote .. no stacking of votes .. we would be surprised at the number of people who do NOT think of themselves as New Age and do NOT disagree with the idea that America should retain its uniqueness and remain American. Remaining American has nothing whatsoever to do with race, religion or color .. we are a vegetable soup .. America is unique in another way in that we are the only country I know of that has no official language or official religion. Many of us can't trace our ancestry more than two or three generations, at best, and even then we aren't totally sure of how much mixed blood we might have or which religion our forefathers might have followed because a lot of that information was lost or corrupted with time. And America DOES recognize the many efforts and sacrifices of those non WASP folks who built this country and who sometimes gave their all to keep it free. This does NOT mean that we should assimilate as a nation .. its the assimilation of other peoples of many races, religions, colors and whatever as AMERICANS that has made us great! The completion of the railroads I wrote of was an event that received recognition worldwide .. newsmen and even royalty from many nations were present when the last spike was driven connecting the efforts of those who had made this magnificent accomplishment possible .. a parade and banquet were held .. and recognition was given to those who worked to move it from the East and the West. Those people were Chinamen working from the West and Irishmen from the East .. two separate races and two separate religions, and this was during a period when Chinese (due to race) and Irishmen (due to religion) were looked down upon in America. What was not mentioned during this celebration was the more than 100 Chinese and Irish laborers who were violently murdered with picks and shovels during brawls that were usually a result of one man looking at the other in a manner they didn't like and, because they couldn't speak the same language they fought .. matter of history this is. But we have moved far forward and things like that are not the norm today. One's religion is of less importance in America than it is in any of the MANY countries in which I have worked and/or lived. Like most of the Western countries, we can find a church, a mosque and a synogogue on the same street. But even in liberal Europe, they are hassling over whether the new European Union Constitution should mention the word " Christian " because Christianity was the religion upon which the foundations of those nations were built. ALL Moslem countries (except Turkey) reference the term " Islam " in their laws .. Turkey doesn't because they fear political Islam .. and that is another story. Americans can't deny that it WAS Christian ideals and the Christian work ethic that helped build this country .. and it is Christian ideals and the Christian work ethic we find in ALL of the rural areas even today. It matters little that a handful of political misfits stroke minorities who have not yet chosen to assimilate and accept the norms of America. They can impact events in some areas some time but if they try to force too many things on the majority to suit the whims of the minority .. it will be similar to what I think would happen if we held a secret ballot to see how folks think on an aromatherapy list .. except the difference would be that the political misfits would then be out of a job. Folks in Europe have already seen the problems that result from bending to the will of minorities at the expense of the majority .. Headquarters for most of the Islamic Fundamentalist groups were allowed to function without control in capitols all over Europe .. and the most freedom the terrorists found was in London .. something that the British Government has now gotten under control. Why and how did this happen? It happened because officials and common people were afraid to say or do anything that might give an impression that they were anti Islamic. Other examples .. or better yet, reactions I can point out that were a direct result of governments leaning too far toward pleasing every one can be seen in those European countries that previously played musical chairs between parties of the left and right but were not too far off center. When events moved too far right .. or as it was in most cases, too far left, the results were that opposition parties became extremists and we saw revolutionary changes taking place in the mentality of the man on the street .. a good case in point is Holland. There are many other examples .. but I will stop there. I think political correctness sucks .. it is phony and dangerous in that you can never know where a person truly stands on an issue. I think it is a fad and it will fade in time .. but I'll not jump on the bandwagon for any reason .. and certainly not to stroke folks and get them to buy essential oils from me. I expose political correctness because I believe its a liberal conspiracy to make people feel chintzy if they stand up and support the basic principles upon which our Great Nation was founded! Americans need to live outside America for a few years in order to be able to see how lucky we are to be Americans .. and to understand how important it is to keep America American! Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch American By Birth * Southern By The Grace Of God * Patriot By Choice
