Vitamin E would protect a balm or salve made of carrier oils and no water component against rancidity...but it won't preserve a cream or lotion with a water phase. there is, unfortunately, NO natural preservative that will prevent the problems that you are having. making sure that all containers and ingredients are as nearly sterile as possible will help... putting the lotion in a pump bottle so that hands can't introduce germs will help, but you really need to be using a chemical preservative if you want any sort of shelf life...and for your own safety... a cream can be contaminated long before it shows any signs of spoilage.
