It's not a stupid question, Bridget, especially since you may have read

some of the older aromatherapy fairy tale books, as the authors often

didn't know much about safety.

All essential oils need to be diluted before being applied to the skin.

That goes for lavender, and tea tree, too, even though many books say neat

use is OK. It isn't.

The lady on the PBS show said to apply lemon oil directly to acneic (sp?)

skin. There are several problems with that: she said use it neat, right

from the bottle, without diluting; lemon (most citruses) are powerful

photosensitizers, which means they magnify the sun's rays, and can cause

burning and scarring;, and oftentimes, pimples that are 'open' can cause

the oil to go right into the subdermal layers, which poses more of a problem.

If you're getting into oils, you might want to get Martin Watt's Plant

Aromatics, the standard in the industry for checking dilution rates,

photosensitivity potential, sensitization, etc.
