The most amazing store ( very long)

Hi all,

Just must share this with you, even though there aren't to many

Swedes (or any other people from the Nordic countries) around here.

There is a store in the central of Stockholm called " Stockholms Aeter

och Essance fabrik " , it's 110 years old (established in 1889) and

have been runned by the same family for 4 generations. I and my

friend Bärbel went there yesterday, cause I was looking for an

Italian Spagetti Spice blend (se later post about this quest) and had

read on their website that they even carried EO's, perfume oils,

floral waters etc. Who in their right mind could resist that?

Let me tell you - the shop is aboslutely amazing, it's a halfstair

below street level, they have not changed a thing in there - same

counter, shelves, jars, tincans, bottles - even the cash register is

ancient! Ha, you can pay with credit card - but nothing online there,

they have this handworked card slip machine I haven't seen anywhere

in ages :-)

All the large bottles, jars and tincans are handlabeled, nothing

tells how the stuff is produced or what's in it. On the shelves of

EOs and perfume oils, they all stodd togheter and when I asked which

was which, they had this lovely handwriten list - if it say

synthetic after the name (like Honeysuckle and Lilac) it was

synthetic - otherwise the real thing. I couldn't resist the urge, so

I forched myself behind the counter (nahh, I asked kindly first) and

started to take down these large old apotheticary (sp??) bottles and

sniffed their contents. The rose, jasmine, bergamotte and some more

or less obvious oils, where synthetic - even my non-trained nose

could detect it. Ther is a way to large difference between syntheic

jasmine and the real thing, like it is with rose and bergamotte - you

could realy smell they wheren't naturals.

BUT - they had some Orangeflower EO, that the list said was natural,

and my nose did a very happy twitch when I unplugged the stopper. My

friend Bärbel who have been to Sicily, said it smelled just like

fresh orange flowers picked of the tree. And let me tell you, the

price was so good it's hard to belive - I bought 50ml right before

you could blink and eye. I must confess, the price was so low that

I'm beginning to doubt if it's for real or not, but I couldn't detect

any syntheics in it. When I got home I took out some smelling strip

and put a drop of each of the two other Nerolis I've got and this new

find of mine did realy hold up to them. Frankly, I don't now what to

belive, but it smells great that for sure.

I also bought some of their handmade real fruit essences - they had

tree kind that they make themselves - passionfruit, raspberry and

blueberry. I bought one bottles each of the firs two and thought I

could use it in lipbalms. I did taste the tinest droplet of the

passsionfruit, hmppfff - that was one bitter and weird taste... I

guess I have to try it out first in the tiniest batch.

If you want to look at the store and see how it looks like from the

outside, their URL is here (though the site is in Swedsih of course):

http://www.essencefabriken.se Click at the " försäljning " button and

you can look at the interior. The EOs and perfume oils are in the

brown bottles on the top far left shelves :-D If you ever have your

way to this part of the earth, you simply must visit it!

Ylva,

I keep looking, trying to see OVER the window ledge. What a fabulous looking

store! It must have been hard to tear yourself away.

and as long as you like the smell, who cares? but it's always nice to find

it's real huh?

My husband's grandfather was a Dahlberg, they came from Sweden. I think they

came over here as young men. Drew died in 1992 I think it was and he was

probably in his 70's. So figure maybe 40-50 years before. Around 1942? So

they aren't so far out.

Curses! Gnashing my teeth,

d'ya know I lived in Stockholm for six years and I never heard of that place.

Of course when I was living there I had yet to discover aromatherapy (that

was in me next stage when I moved to England for another 6 years). Wish now that

I had been into aromatherapy and known about that place... if I ever get back

for a visit....

Cheers!

Yap! Shore did, in Bromma (right across from Pripps where I worked once as a

cleaning gal), Enskede, FiskSatre (wrong key board of course) and one other

place I've forgotten off hand and worked at the Arbetsmarknadsstyrelsen and

Nigerian Embassy...

Just wish I had known of that little place you mentioned ;-)

too. It sure is a small world after all :-D Not to many in your part

of the world actually knows where Sweden is, but I have found to my

great amazement that people in the AT and natural skincare business

in the US are one bunch of well elightened people - hurray!

Good Morning Ylva,

Although I have only hoped I could go there on day, I never have.

I'm 1/4 Swedish, my mother was 1/2, yet to her dying day she would admit to

anything but being Swedish. My stepfather, although he is the only real father

I really ever had,

he is 100% Danish. A wonderful man. My mother use to love to tease him about

something is smelly in Denmark.

You part of the world is one I have always wanted to visit.

Have lived in Germany in the early 70's. Sure would love to go back there too,

what a beautiful country. My daughter is there this week, Oh I wish I was with

her instead of the emergency contact for my 3 grandsons, and I'm the puppy

watcher. LOL

Hugs Nancy
