Guest guest
Hi there, does anyone know a safe essential oil to use to clean a dogs ears ? His one ear may have an infection, it looks as though it has coffee grinds in it. Thanks Carol It takes 42 muscles in your face to frown. It only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and smack someone upside the head.
Guest guest
That sounds like ear mites. They sometimes bring along a yeast infection in the ear. I'm not sure what natural remedy will work on that. Melissa - Carol Pearce Wednesday, November 26, 2003 7:31 AM Dogs ears Hi there, does anyone know a safe essential oil to use to clean a dogs ears ? Guest guest
Hi Carol: Our vet told me to mix 1/2 alcohol and 1/2 white vinegar to wash our Bichons ears once a month. If you buy from the vet (ear wash), it costs a ton of money. It sounds llike your pup has ear mites. You might want to take him to the vet to be sure. Guest guest
Thanks, I'll try that.. at least if it cleans the gunk, then I can see if it's a bigger problem than I thought. Guest guest
Hi Carol, > Hi there, does anyone know a safe essential oil to use to clean a dogs ears ? > His one ear may have an infection, it looks as though it has coffee grinds in it. Could be yeast, could be bacterial or could be mites - or any combination thereof. No way of knowing for sure unless you scoop out some goo and look at it under a microscope - and know what you are looking for. Best to get to a vet and get a diagnosis and treatment. The new generation of earmeds are very safe and effective. The over the counter treatments for earmites have pyrethrins, which are have been shown to cause parkinson's in humans with repeated exposure. AS far as putting alcohol/vinegar in the ears, best to get the infection under control first - if you tried that out in an inflammed ear - you might inadvertantly be causing your dog a lot of pain. Once the ear calms down, that's a good preventative measure - as long as it is diluted. Plain old olive oil will *help* kill ear mites. It occludes the breathing pore, and suffocates them. But they are pretty hearty, so I wouldn't rely on this tx alone. It's also a nice, gentle way to help get that goo out of a sore ear. As far as EO's go - I wouldn't try it myself, but if you were inclined, I'd wait until the ear is calm, and not irritated. When it's red and innflammed there are microscopic tears and lesions in the skin - if you put an EO on top of this it will greatly increase the chance of a sensitivity or reaction. Keeping ears dry and clean will help stave off any future infections. Hope this helps! JenB
Guest guest
How do you keep dog ears dry when bathing them in a shower? I have thought that because their ear flaps cover their ears, it's enough. Maybe not. thanks Warm regards, Janine Phariss www.BlueSageNaturals.com Unique & Innovative Herbals

You can stick cotton in the opening of the ear - it will absorb any water that gets past the flap, and keep water from going down into the canal. Guest guest
finally something that i can answer on this list! LOL anyways, carol, i've gotten this recipe from several of my dog friends. several of them swear that it's great for yeast infections in the ears. 16 oz Isopropyl Alcohol 4 T Boric Acid Powder 16 drops Gentian Violet Solution 1% fill the ear canal with it. stand back, the dog will shake it's head and the solution will fly. please do this outside if possible because the gentian violet solution will stain. hope this helps deb ps. butch, didn't have a chance to do the quiz because i get the digest and when i read it it was 9am central. hubby looked it over, 22yrs in the army and he had shook his head at some of them! Guest guest
My vet told me to mix alcohol, and vinegar, fill up the ear and stand back, because they shake like crazy to get it out. Rahnny
Guest guest
Hi Carol, I would not use Isopropyl Alcohol in my dog's ears. Everyone, please use caution when using home remedies... Visit a vet if in doubt. Guest guest
Hi Carol, I agree with Sevi. I'd definitely go into the vet to get a correct diagnosis first, and then look into the options from there. That way you know for sure what you are up against. It SOUNDS like ear mites, but might as well be 100% sure first. And I too wouldn't put rubbing alcohol in a pupster's ears. You could ask the vet if there are any home maintenances/remedies for such a thing. They will sometimes give simple recommendations Hope the beastie's stinky ears feel better soon *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Sevi [digitalk9] Friday, November 28, 2003 9:37 PM Re: Dogs ears Hi Carol, I would not use Isopropyl Alcohol in my dog's ears.
