Hey Dorothy,

> Hey Chris,

Not Chris here but I'm gonna answer cause (1) y'all are asleep now and

(2) I had done some small bitta research on this last year. ;-p

> So would you suggest that the powdered resin would be good for canker

> sores as a preventative or just a treatment after the sore developes???

Use as a preventive would suggest continuous or frequent use .. so I

would say NOT as a preventive.

> And while on the subject is there any definitive answer as to what

> causes canker sores??

Yes .. Streptococcus sanguis bacteria cause the eruptions. They are NOT

herpes related. But medical science is not 100% sure why canker sores

(aphthous ulcers) develop .. or why they develop more frequently in some

folks and not in others. They believe heredity plays a part in this and

they believe that if you get them once you're likely to get them again.

Women are more likely to get them than men .. especially during

pregnancy or during parts of their menstrual cycles. Stress can hasten

the eruptions .. as can food allergies. Denture wearers get them from

the pressure or rubbing of false teeth against gums.

Which brings to mind an interesting bit of trivia that has nothing to do

with this cept'in I thought I'd like to mention it. ;-p Just finished

another of Kathleen O'Neil Gear's super-fine books .. as I mentioned a

while back, she's an anthropoligist/historian .. specializes in the SW

Indians .. primarily the Pueblo groups and more specifically the Anasazi

cultures. Book was " The Visitant. " Lemme say that 90% of the folks in

the USA would probably not get past the first 10 pages of one of her

books .. they'd put it down from boredom due to lack of patience and

lack of understanding of what the hell she was talking about in the

second place. But folks who pursue alternative treatment information

are (with some exceptions) more enlightened and generally have more of

an inquiring mind .. so enough stroking for now. ;-) Well .. lemme add

that if you start one of her books and don't like it .. tis better to

avoid mentioning that fact on one of these lists.

Anyhow .. whilst unearthing remains in New Mexico these archeologists

find certain abnormalities in the layout of the graves .. so they call

in a clinical anthropologist .. which really has nothing to do with the

point I have not addressed yet. Took me a long time to get to this

point but here it is .. twixt the lines I discovered that most wimmens

develop boney growths inside their skulls during certain periods of life

but mens rarely do. This can occur during pregnancy or menopause. And

its rarely seen in wimmens under 30 (unless they are pregnant .. but the

growths dissolve after delivery) and rarely seen in mens under any/all

circumstances .. plus fairly common in wimmens over 50 years old. One

researcher mentioned that they were quite often painful as they caused

pressure in the brain .. and another suggested that there could well be

some connection between this and depression and/or migraine headaches in

women. Done. But good trivia methinks.

Back to canker sores. There's a crap pot full of commercial treatments

for canker sores but even without treatment they'll go away in 10-14

days .. and can hurt like hell in the meantime. Spicey or acidic foods

irritate more while one has the sores so if you are Mexican you gotta

learn to eat Mama's chicken soup during that period.

My Turkish dentist (who practiced in New York City for 7-8 years) is one

of my regular customers for Myrrh .. he buys a 20 ml bottle of Ethoipian

Commiphora myrrha every 3-4 weeks. Treats his clients with it.

Somewhere else I read (or did I imagine it?) that a diet rich in Tripe

Soup, Raki, ice-cold Efes Beer, Doner Kabab, Sish Kabab, Lamb Chops or

Barbequed Kid, Black Sea Mullet and Hamsi, Eggplant Salads with loads of

Garlic, Goat Cheese, Plain Yoghert, Black and Green Olives, Extra-Virgin

Olive Oil, Fresh Bread slathered with village butter and fruit jams and

jellies without preservatives .. and lotsa thick, rich Turkish Coffee

would prevent them. I think I believe that .. cause I think I made it

all up. ;-p

Do you know how he uses the myrrh oil? I am guessing a couple

drops in water as a mouthwash. Or is it direct application with a

q-tip (like tea tree)?

Also read that myrrh oil in jojoba can give a " non-surgical facelift "

(wrinkle remover) but don't have any firsthand experience with

this. And that the powder (or oil) is good for sore throats...though

a lot of oils are recommended for sore throats.
