Guest guest
MDs' do miss cancers, in my experience. For the last 4 years, I encounter at least one case each year, where I was the one who alerted the patient to go do particular tests while their family doctors or specialist either wasn't aware of any problem of concern or totally missed diagnosed before I saw the patient. I am glad to report that all but one survived. The one who did not survive was a pancreas head ca; the surviving ones included stomach ca, acute leukemia, large intestine ca, and breast ca. One of my patient's family doctor calls me the " guru " while these surving patients call me doctor, but I never call myself doctor. Of course, if the doctor's title would help us getting paid by insurance companies, I don't mind getting one:-) Mike L. ra6151 wrote: In a message dated 5/18/06 8:33:56 AM, DrGRPorter writes: > We had a discussion some weeks back about how some practitioner had missed?lt;BR> > diagnosing cancer, and instead had treated someone for back pain for a very > long?time without good results. > I didn't chime in earlier on the above discussion, but now want to add (probably obvious to many) that MD's also miss the diagnosis of cancer in some instances. I can name 4 people I knew well (under the age of 50) who spent 1-3 yrs going from doctor to doctor before cancer was finally diagnosed. (all have since died) I think when the only symptom of the cancer is pain, it often remains undiagnosed for longer than it should. I should mention that all the people I knew had backgrounds in dance and were relatively young, and because of that, I think the doctors assumed the pain was musculoskeletal. ---RoseAnne S.
