Marian Blum, L.Ac., DNBAO licensed acupuncturist and herbalist Lets hope this is true and you can have a choice. . I have been involved with a 5 week journey of unbelievable consequences. A patient of mine diagnosed with melanoma 4 years ago came to me and followed everything I said and apparently was tumor free in 6 months and remained so until Jan 05. She did not report the breast lump to me until March and then refused to go for a thermogram until May and did not start treatment until June 05 refusing to go the western doctor because she would rather die than lose her breast despite my plea. Her husband died suddenly in October 05 and she stopped coming to me in December after missing a lot of appointments. I was called in April with a desperate midnight call that she was in severe pain please come. She was about one hour distance from me. I got there about 1:30am and she was curled in the bed unable to lift her head without excruciating pain. Her head was resting on her chest and she was on her side. I really felt she had a crick in her neck from improper lying in the bed. I found out that she had had a bout of severe low back pain the month before which the MD's refused to treat without her allowing a mastectomy. They literally told her they would not treat her without it. She was in such severe pain she allowed it. This woman does not take aspirin for a headache preferring to do acupressure homeopathy or herbs for all of her medical conditions. They recommended a morphine drip which she refused. They had her on a Fentanyl patch for pain to be changed every 72 hours, two Percocets every 4 hours and Valium for the muscle spasms. They were giving radiation treatments for the low back pain promising her it would only take 7 session. They called me after 8 sessions and she was still in pain. The mastectomy revealed it was a primary cancer the melanoma had not metastasized and the bone cancer had spread from the breast. It was not estrogen dependent so Tamoxifan was not an option. It was taking her 20 minutes to get to the bathroom 15 feet away due to pain and any jarring of the neck was excruciating. Within two hours of auricular acupuncture and homeopathy her pain level decreased and she slept 3 hours for the first time since the mastectomy. We fed her a little and gave some water and I asked her if she wanted another pain pill and she said yes but fell asleep before she took it. She slept another 5.5 hours and awoke alert and able to be moved to the living room for the first time in a week. Not knowing how or when rx I felt she should continue the Percocet for fear of her going through withdrawal. I later found out it was Rx PRN. She was down to 1 Percocet every 8 hours after treatment. I told her she had to go to the MD for a diagnosis of the neck the next day Monday) which she did. Remember she is worse any movement (Bryonia homeopathic remedy) Getting on the diagnostic table was extremely painful. They wanted to give her morphine and she tried to refuse asking them to call me to give acupuncture and homeopathy. That ticked off someone there and they gave her a shot of morphine anyway and called for a psychiatric consult. He arrived an hour later and determined she was incompetent to handle her own health care needs and committed her against her will and her son's protests. They implied they would charge him with abuse for failing to keep her comfortable if he pushed it too far. They did not come right and tell him that he would be arrested but he was afraid he would be. They put her on a morphine dripped and then the fun started. They took her down for a total of 21 radiation treatments through the pelvis because she could not lay on her stomach due to the mastectomy. She becomes severely constipated and tries to get out of bed and falls injuring her head. They over medicate her despite our pleas to reduce the dosage because she in not used to drugs but they refuse. She goes unresponsive for 5 days so they put a feeding tube down her nose. She aspirates and now has pneumonia. All of her vital signs remained strong she was just unresponsive. They are ignoring her swollen legs. Insisting on doing chemo therapy but can't because of an elevated leukocyte count probably due to the radiation but they have to run more tests. Then they discover a blood clot in a vein in her brain and move her to ICU. By now she also has congestive heart failure with 20% heart function. In ICU they remove the morphine drip and she responds by becoming alert and responsive with good memory. The clot was in a part of the brain for cognitive function not physical so paralysis would be unlikely but confusion could be. They convince her that only 3 bags of chemo and she would not need anymore for her low back. (They got all of the tumor from the breast and no chemo or radiation needed for that.) She had a great day nurse in ICU who asks her if she is in pain because she is making guttural sounds. She said no the feeding tube was making her throat sore. She remained alert when not napping. The night nurse comes in hears the moan and immediately injects her with morphine without asking any questions and she goes unresponsive again and has a stroke. She remained hospitalized over three weeks before letting her come home. They did give her one bag of chemo but refused our please to use insulin potentiation therapy which would allow one to use less chemo while targeting the cancer cells dependent on glucose specifically. Fortunately she is alive out of the hospital and now on no western meds. The pain is under control with homeopathy and Bach flowers and acupuncture. I am investigating a laser to use with her. She is refusing more chemo or radiation but I will encourage her to get a second opinion from an IPT oncologist in Tampa or Miami, Fl, USA They implied that our medicine was quackery and that she had endangered her life by wasting time in not coming to them first. By the way I would still refer out for the diagnostic procedure given the same circumstances. I feel it is important that we know what we are dealing with. BTW the western MD tried to order a nerve block in the neck instead of the lumbar because I had rx a collar and he didn't read the whole chart. The neck was clear of cancer. I made him pull out the report to show me it had spread to the neck. It was a muscle spasm causing the pain but because it was too painful to the touch due to her weakened condition I had to refer out. They never did the spinal block either. They eased up on the son when he produced a power of attorney letter. It is important that you have someone looking out for you. Find someone you trust and give them medical power of attorney for your wishes. However the MD's only talked medical jargon and the son had no clue what they were talking about so it was lucky I was there to interpret. I now know the value of the Living Will even if young as well. Any suggestions and protocol for lumbar spine lesions would be appreciated. I know not to needle there hence the desire for the laser. Guest guest
I don't know if I can help you but may I recommend a couple of treatment protocols? I suggest Master Tong's acupuncture. But since I don't know her exact symptomology I will suggest a couple of protocols: 1. If the pain is in the center of her spine, use this: On her left hand needle SI 3 and SI 4, but puncture SI 3 0.5 cun distal and SI 4 0.5 cun proximal. Then needle DU 26. Get heavy daqi. Have her move her back. It will work immediately, or not at all. She will give you a BIG smile after DU 26. If this does not work, use the following: 2. Ling-Gu and Da Bai on the opposite side of the pain. Have the patient move around when the needles are in. These points are located at LI 3 and between the 1st and 2nd metacarpals, proximal to Hegu (do not use Hegu). I sincerely hope this helps you and your patient. I'm so sorry for what she is going through. Dr. Donald J.
