Guest guest
Have you tried switching to a different formula? Also you can think about massaging LI 4, thighs and abdomen. For abdominal massage start gently moving the belly area left to right, then with massage in circular motion with one finger in a clockwise along the path of elimination in a spiral starting at the umbilicus. Guest guest
Dear all! Please could anyone help me with finding a remedy for my 8 week old baby girl who has constipation. Her mother doesnt look after her health verywell from a Tcm point of view as she eats a lot of cold foods, has asthma and doesnt excercise. Her milk doesnt satisfy the baby, who needs bottle feeding , which is what has caused the constipation. Every three days we are having to put a supositorry as special milk and laxitives arent working. I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks Nial

Guest guest
Dear Nial, First have the child's pediatrician determine that the child doesn't have Hirschsprung's disease, a congenital condition that occurs in about one in 5000 live births, and causes severe constipation. It is resolved by surgery. Assuming that that is ruled out, Is the mother nursing? If so determine the TCM pattern of both the mother and baby, and treat the mother herbally. The medicine would be absorbed through the breast milk and help resolve the baby's constipation. Gentle abdominal massage or tui na can be very helpful. Picture the abdomen like a clock, and make 8 small circles beginning at 12 o'clock, then one o'clock and so on. Also don't be afraid to superficially tap the appropriate acupunture point to treat the the pattern. Remember, different pattern, different treatment! Good luck Yehuda nial_sawa <nialsawa wrote: Dear all! Please could anyone help me with finding a remedy for my 8 week old baby girl who has constipation. Guest guest
Hi Nial, I recommend you to do daily this procedures: Brush the area below the navel, mainly the left, until being rose coloured. Apply in the two arms, moxa in H-7 (Shenmen - wrist crease, on radial side of flexor weeded ulnaris, between ulna & pisiform) " without leaning in the skin " , until being rose coloured. These procedures should be made carefully in function of the baby's age. Guest guest
Hi there, Firstly its worth keeping in mind that you may have to try some different types of infant formulae, they vary across the brands and formulations and your baby may respond better to a different type. Also, if the reason that you need to supplement is because you dont have enough milk, there are things you can do. Try fenugreek in a tea for a bit of an immediate boost and also the ayurvedic herb shatavari is used to promote breast milk. (In TCM I believe mu tong and tong cao promote lactation, but I would probably just use tong cao) Of course you can always differentiate the mother with TCM and use the corresponding formula as well. If you wanted to keep trying to breast feed, then perhaps consider using a supply line so that the baby is still stimulating the nipples and is still getting some breast milk from the mother so that she manufactures more. This can also help to avoid nipple confusion later, as well. Herbal formulae for the baby are Xiao Ru Wan or Jian Pi Wan, depending on whether you think its retention of milk or deficiency of spleen qi causing the problem. Both of these can be made into a decoction and given with the milk formula. Dont forget to try infant tuina as well, this can be very good. Also, is the baby not satisfied because there isnt enough milk? Or is it because the baby is not feeding well (attachment problems etc) and/ or is only getting the first half of the milk, which is less satisfying and not digested well until they are older. If you think the latter is the problem (baby was doing lots of very liquid orange bowel movements with not much in the way of curds in it, and not being satisfied from feeding) you can try expressing some of the milk out first before breastfeeding, this allows the baby access to the hind milk and also stimulates production of more breast milk. The mum's diet needs to be protein rich and adequate to the demands of breast feeding, and more rest for the mum would be prescribed if possible if breastfeeding is what they want to do. (Chinese prescription: Pig trotter soup, anyone?) Best of luck with this. Lea.
