Guest guest
RE: the question about fibroids and ovarian cysts...well first of all, I'm sure there are people on this list who have much more experience than me, so maybe we will hear from them. But I just saw 2 patients this week, each who have a 6cm ovarian cyst. One's MD said do nothing, the other's MD has scheduled her for surgery. In these two cases, the most obvious difference between the two women is that one has had an experience of extreme pain due to torsion of the cyst (she's the one scheduled for surgery), and the other one has some pain symptoms, but they are much more vague and there's nothing that can be seen on sonogram such as twisting, etc. I understand that in rare cases, torsion of a cyst or a pendulous fibroid can be life-threatening if the torsion cuts off blood flow to major vessels, or creates a septic situation in the body. But in general fibroids are not 'dangerous' per se - they don't progress to cancer, for instance. I'm a little less familiar with the dangers of cysts, except for what I mentioned above about torsion. A 6cm cyst is not the size of a grapefruit, but perhaps your patient has a 6cm cyst and a uterine fibroid as big as a grapefruit. Surgery may be inevitable, especially if your patient experiences a lot of pain or severe bleeding. But even if she opts for surgery, herbs and acupunture will help a lot, before and after. In some cases, surgery may really improve the woman's quality of life, but in other cases surgery leads to other problems, like scar tissue, and both fibroids and cysts have a tendency to return. In the case of your patient, it seems like some clarification is needed. Is the doctor recommending surgery for both fibroids and cyst? And why is the surgery recommended? What symptoms is your patient experiencing? And also, what is her age, because that could be a factor, too, in deciding for surgery or not. Finally, I think it may be generally true that once fibroids reach a certain size (maybe around 2-3cm) it is very difficult to disperse or shrink them even with consistent raw herbal treatment and acupunture. (That's been my personal experience.) But I'd be interested to hear from more experienced practitioners on this. ---RoseAnne
Guest guest
Herbs can definitely slow the growth of fibroids in some cases, although they may not shrink them once they have achieved a certain size. This may help to delay the need for surgery.
