Guest guest
Hi Everybody! I have the forms and the instructions about the acupuncture codes. What about the diagnosis codes? Say Liver and stomach disharmony with counterflow of stomach qi? What diagnosis code is that? Another one is Liver, spleen and kidney deficiency complicated by retention of damp heat and blood stasis. I don't get simple cases. Guest guest
You would need to make this depending upon symtoms such as abdominal pain, etc. In some states, we cannot diagnose and so would need to rely upon another provider for this info. The codes are called ICD-9 codes and it stands for International Classification of Disease - 9th edition. Hope this helps. Mike W. So I use the three digit diagnosis codes from the book and then the 97810 code for acupuncture and the 99811 for electro acupuncture? Each additional 15 minutes I use an additional 97813 or 97814? The lady comes in and says she has a migraine so I use 346.90 (0 because it is not intractable)? I am in Florida, by law we are primary care providers, patients may self-refer to us. Now if she had been to a Western Doc and I had his notes I would use the diagnosis code he used? Do I have to send in my case notes as well as the insurance form? That would be a bother! It may be staring me in the face, but I don't see any codes for Evaluation and Management. Are there any? The PDF mentions E & M codes but doesn't give them. http://www.aaom.info/cptcodes.pdf Regards, Pete >> I have the forms and the instructions about the acupuncture codes. >> What about the diagnosis codes? Guest guest
Pete, I can comment on some of these but recommend you attend a seminar on the topic as well. First, congrats on choosing a state that has a more proressive law regarding the practice of acupuncture and saw the benefits of making it primarycare. I would check out a more recent version of the AMA CPT manual as many codes have changed and also pick up a copy or check out from library on current ICD-9 codes. Many times the insr will deny a claim w/o explanation and it could be for using wrong codes. They expect you know what the current ones are (many of us do not). You appear to be correct in coding (typo on your acu w/stim) for acupuncture and each extended amount of time. There seems to be more interest in our patient medical records for reimbursement and so to shorten payment delays, I would suggest you copy and send this in with the claim, unless you file electronically. Then use snail mail. You might try to google for E and M codes. Keep in mind that the way you structure your practice can determine if this is a viable item to charge for or not. Do you have a fee schedule? Please seek out a seminar, it will be worth your time, effort and money to do so. Email me offlist if you want to discuss these. Hope this helps. Mike W.
