I think that this may have been an honorary doctorate, not quite the same thing. Usually you have to give a *lot* of money to the school, and it is not the same doctorate that the school usually grants. Something like " Doctor of Humane Letters " which anyone would see as an honorary, and the person himself *never* tries to pass him or herself off as a Doctor of any kind, just hang it on the den wall as a social conversation piece.
