I am a first year student and my brothers suffer from frequent bouts of

canker/cold sores. I haven't read much about it and don't know how to help

them.

I know there are a lot of factors that can cause them. Any information will

be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, it fits both brothers. One has frequent canker sores, one has frequent

cold sores. Both have different lifestyles and diets. I know they have to

treat the root cause. I'm working on that part. I was hoping to find them some

temporary relief. Thank you for your answers.

Both canker and cold sores or just one or the other?

I've suffered with cankers most of my life. They are brought on by

stress, poor diet and more stress. The very best treatment I have found

for myself is Golden Flower's " Intestinal Fungus Formula " which has a

heavy dose of Huang Bai and Huang Lian (cold and bitter). I let the

tablets dissolve in my mouth (warning it is VERY bitter!) and hold the

liquid in contact with the sores as long as possible. 15 - 20 minutes

is normal. The sores feel better within 5 minutes, and have healed

completely within 2 days. Normally it takes a week or more for them to

heal if left on their own.

I have prescribed these herbs to several other patients and they have

reported similar results. Canker sores are typically d/t St heat and the

GF Intestinal Fungus Formula does a great job at clearing that heat!

Topical xue jie powder or liquid works great for the acute sore. Then

likely follow with appropriate formula to treat root problem.

Chris,

Not a TCM treatment, but highly effective is baking soda applied directly to

the canker. If this is done several times during the day it will help, as well

as rinsing with a baking soda solution. Sugar and stress increase the pH levels

of your saliva. This can also cause stress cavities, which is why it is good to

also rinse with baking soda, as it will neutralize the acid. The real solution

is to reduce stress and improve your diet, but this will help.

Canker sores acute can be from " yang ming organ syndrome " , " heart

fire " , " stomach heat " , wind and toxic heat " , etc.

Chronic sores are more " heart yin def, with some phlegm " , " liv qi

stagnation with some heat " , or even " sp yang def. "

There are many topical things to put on them but until you get to the

root cause they will just come back

Do any of these fit your Brother?

Makes sense Mark, but baking soda never really worked that well with my

cankers. I used to have them about every month, but lately I get them

only once or twice a year and never as bad as they used to get. One

time back in the late 1980's I got sores in my mouth and throat that

almost put me in the hospital. They put me on anti-biotics which did

nothing. I cured it myself by drinking luke warm black tea (alkaline)

and raw eggs.

I suspect that they are viral, triggered by stress and diet. My stress

is probably higher than it used to be but my diet has improved somewhat.

The GF formula really hits the nail on the head for my cankers. When I

first start to feel one coming on, I take immediate action with herbs

and 9 times out of 10 it nips it in the bud. I think they should rename

it a " canker sore " treatment. :-) I suspect the herbs are very

alkaline as well.

Ok then, temporary relief it is.

This is for a grey/white canker sore that is not inflamed, without

fever, non red, non heat...

Wubeizi 5g and Baitang 5g stir fried until brown. Add Ku fan 30g and

Pengsha 5g and grind them altogether into powder. Put on canker

4-5times per day.

Sorry forgot the cold sore brother.

Before the blisters break.

Take fresh earthworms (Dilong) remove dirt and dry them off. Putthem

in bowl with half as muck sugar as worms. Three hours or so later

filter out the ooze that apears and add to sore 5 times perday.

(there is another with equal parts Xionghuang and Baifan but the

earthworm works better.)

After blisters break

Yu xing cao 500g add to 1.5 liters and decoct half away. Put on cloth

and hold to cold sore three times per day for up to half an hour.

See other formulas for herpes at:

http://content.nhiondemand.com/moh/media/TCMHC1.asp?objID=1009

77 & ctype=tcmhc

ne (Liang Xue Jie Du Tang) has xue jie in the name but has a different

meaning (Cool Blood & Resolve Toxin Dec): Fu Sai Ping, et al. used

Liang Xue Jie Du Tang (a decoction for removing heat from blood and

for detoxifying) to treat 35 cases of genital herpes and the total

effectiveness rate of this treatment was 97.1%. The formula consisted

of Sheng Di (Rehmannia), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark), Chi Shao (Red

Peony Root), Zi Cao (Lithosperm), Huang Lian (Coptis), and Jin Yin

Hua (Lonicera Flower).

Hi Phil,

Thank you for catching my error. I was thinking about it increasing the acidity

of saliva. Yes, you are right both stress and sugar will lower the pH levels of

your saliva.
