Guest guest
I searched wanfangdata for some info on warfarin and Chinese herbs. ---In one article, Chinese authors investigated the effect of Chinese herbs TOGETHER on Deep Vein Thrombosus of the legs. Group A received herbs + warfarin ( keeping plasma thrombinogen at 1.5) and group B received only herbs. Both groups had a marked effect, but the effect in group A was significantly better: total cure for all 36 patients in this group, as measured with Doppler effects, venography and rheologic examinations.\ Herbal formula was: dang gui 15 chuan xiong 12 tao ren 12 hong hua 12 wu shao she 20 chai hu 12 niu xi 15 mu gua 20 with signifcant blood stasis: plus ji xue teng 30 dan pi 15 tu yuan (di bie chong) 15 with pronounced damp evil: plus fang ji 12 ze xie 12 yi mu cao 15 with accompanying yin vacuity: plus sheng di 20 xuan shen 15 mai men dong 15 hua fen 20 So results were actually better with warfarin added. No contra-indications are being mentioned. Reference: Zhong guo zhong xi yi jie he wai ke za zhi Oct 2002 (year 8, ed. 5) Title: Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombus of legs by combination of herbs with effects of activating blood circulation and dispersing stasis and Warfarin sodium Authors: Song Hongfa, Dong Miaowei, Wang Qingxuan et al ---I found another reference to Chinese herbs and Warfarin in the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation. This article appeared in Shanxi Zhong Yi 2005, year 26, ed. 7 and was authored by Shen Ninghong, Chen Yan and Zhu Bo. In this article both groups were taking Warfarin, and one group also received Yi Qi Hui Xue Fang, a formula with the following ingredients: dang shen 20 mai men dong 20 huang qi 30 ting li zi 30 ge gen 30 dan shen 30 zhi fu zi 10 wu wei zi 10 ze xie 10 zhu ling 10 In the herbs plus warfarin group, INR (International normalized ratio) was significantly better than in the warfarin group. There was no signifant difference for aPTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time) for both groups. However, interestingly Warfarin dosage had been lowered in the herbal group. ---And according to another research article, Chinese herbs beat Warfarin in the treatment of Renal Nephrotic Syndrome. Herbs were NOT taken together with Warfarin in this study. FYI, the herbs used were Jian Pi Yi Shen Di Tan Hua Yu Fang: sheng huang qi 60 bai zhu 15 nu zhen zi 30 sha yuan zi 30 tu si zi 30 dan shen 30 dang shen 20 pu gong ying 10 fu ling 15 chuan xiong 15 di long 15 jiang can 15 with water swelling: plus ze xie, zhu ling with bloody urine: 1plus bai mao gen, xiao ji with diabetes: plus sheng di, xuan shen, hua fen with proteinuria: plus shi wei, he ye and higher dosage of huang qi with lung infection: plus yu xing cao, huang qin susceptibility to common colds: plus bai shao, fang feng four limbs not warm: plus fu zi, gan jiang Reference for this article is: Shanxi Zhong Yi 2003, year 24, ed. 4. Author: Wei Xiaomeng. So two articles suggest that many Chinese herbs can be used together with Warfarin, increasing therapeutic effectiveness and lowering warfarin dosage, and one article showed that in the treatment of Renal Nephrotic Syndrome Chinese herbs were better that warfarin alone.
