Guest guest
Interesting program on acupuncture yesterday, although I have a few gripes with a couple of things. They did however set uip an interesting experiemnt. - the subjects brains were scanned with a very powerful scanner while they were being needled with one acupunture needle (on what looked like Col.4). The result was that there was clear evidence that areas of the brain are affected by the use of a needle. When the needle was inserted the expected brain areas became active with what was obviously the needle sensation, but what was not expected was that once the needle was deep enough to obtain de qi areas of what looked like part of the limbic system became deactrivatred. They suggest this iindicates that acpunture reduces pain, but considering the area of the brain I would suspect there is much more than this involved. The study was said to have been a welll designed experiment using eanough subjects, and a control group This is the first time that is has been shown that acupuncture may actually be affecting the brain. The progrram presenter, who was also part of the team that conducted the experiement said she was totaly mystified by the fact that one needle could have such affect with no current physiological explanation. see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4631930.stm Helene
Guest guest
Hi Helene, I watched it too. It was a good program. I was glad to see that Hugh McPherson was involved in the final study. I was very interested in the use of acupuncture instead of a general anaesthetic for open heart surgery. Has anyone been trained in the use of acupuncture to shut off pain centres during an operation? Warm regards, Attilio D'Alberto Doctor of (Beijing, China) B.Sc. (Hons) T.C.M. M.A.T.C.M.
