Bob Bob, good point about the St Johns Wort, even food recommendations like telling the patient they need to eat more veggies. The green leafy ones will make changes in blood clotting because of vitamin K..
Guest guest
Hi all, I frequently teach about herb/drug interaction. Anyone prescribing herbs should be constantly tracking current issues. At the very least, please check out a book called Herb Contraindications & Drug interactions by Francis Brinker as well as follow what is going on at ABC (Amer Botanical Council) website www.herbalgram.org The greatest risk of herb/drug is will blood thinners, cyclosporin and protease inhibitors, also st. john's wort has the most cases of interactions with meds. I use no more caution than any other patient I treat as far as the acupuncture goes. I have never had an excessive bleeding problem with this patient. Where you need to be careful is with herbs. I may be overly cautious, but I don't prescribe herbs to patients on Coumadin as there are several known drug - herb interactions and I'd rather be safe than sorry. Christopher Vedeler L.Ac., C.Ht. Could someone help me here with precautions and contraindications. Thanks. Regards, Karen
