If our office has more than one, we are the employer so that would mean or office manager would be in the union demanding higher pay, better health care, more vacation, matching 401K Lobby power!! As a group, with the exception of a few people, Acupuncturists are horrible at protecting our rights and I think we could use the help of professionals when it comes to dealing with government. As I described in another post, Hypnotists were under attack from the psychologists in Florida. Every year or two would be another attempt at regulating a large number of successful hypnotists out of the business. One year, when it looked like the Psychologists were going to win, the hypnotists joined the AFL-CIO. The union sent their lobby power to Tallahassee and totally defeated the bad bill. Now that the hypnotists have the fighting power of a large union behind them, there has been no attempt to legislate anything against them. If the acupuncturists around the country would join a common union, that union would pursue our agenda and protect our profession. The union would send professional lobbyists to talk on our behalf. Professional lobbyists work. Very well. I have seen it personally and was very impressed with what can happen in a very short time. I understand there are a few unions to choose from. I am not personally committed to one over another as long as the union we choose as a profession would be committed to working for us as well as I experienced the AFL-CIO. Please explore the possibilities of having a trained professional lobbying team working for us. We could act proactively from empowerment rather than meekly trying to defend against other powerful lobbyist working to enrich other groups at our expense. The AMA is clearly a labor union on a certain level, but in other ways " professional associations " more resemble guilds. Not all MDs are in the AMA, not all acupuncturists are in FSOMA, AOMNC or whatever. Clearly something is needed at least as an option, however. The one I love is the NEA, but better I not start on that . . . Regards, Pete
