Bian4 means to differentiate, Zheng4 means syndrome, and Bing4 means disease, or more specifically in this case disease name. Asthma is a Bing4, and the various TCM patterns are the Zheng4. In eclectic medicine, as in TCM, there are numerous remedies for asthma, which are then differentiated based upon additional signs and symptoms like tongue and pulse. this is definitely similar to some forms of kanpo, in which one matches the formula to the patient based upon guiding signs and symptoms rather a named pattern. this is not my preferred style of practice, but it is not allopathic. And it not symptom based treatment. there is no difference between naming a pattern or just treating it if it is the same symptom complex in both cases.
