Lasers and LEDs: Safety of

Hi people

Does anyone know of any research (of any sort) or any mechanistic

studies into possible damage that could be caused by laser or LED

acupuncture, in particular carcinogenic effects?

Just thinking of using laser or LED on my daughter (because of its

convenience) but would like some idea of its safety first.

I've spent an hour or two trawling the web - with no success.

Many thanks for whatever people can profer.

All the best to you.

David

Most Websites that mention LLLT and cancer claim no risk of laser

irradiation increasing cancer cell numbers.

However, see: http://tinyurl.com/bknhm [it suggests a slight risk].

Let me explain a bit about the therapeutic lasers

(these range from 630 nm - 915 nm in wavelength).

These lasers can only cause excitation and heating

which can never cause cancer or injur the cells. While

the gamma rays, X-rays, and ultrviolet light (these

have wavelength less than 320 nm) can " break " (ionize)

atoms and break up bonds in molecules which they

encounter, so can cause cancer by damaging the cells

with prolonged exposure.

People who r over sensitive to light (photo allergy),

and who can only tolerate red light (wavelength over

600 nm) can tolerate laser therapy but cannot be

exposed to the light of a candle.

We've been using therapeutic lasers in children who

suffer from cerbral palsy for the last 5 years with

great success. We've treated children as young as 3

months old with no side effects reported. U can can

visit the follwing website with a lot of useful

information on laser therapy and its safety issues.

www.laser.nu

Hope this helps.

Dr. Anwar,

I recently bought a 1.5W 950nm LED unit and was told to use it for

extended periods, up to 30 minutes. I have done so and at times

gotten very good results. What is your opinion on such dosing?

Thanks,

We use differnt doses in different age groups. We can

treat an adult for this time but in childern we have

to reduce the time by 50%. We stimulate body points in

adults for 45 seconds (for 1 point) and scalp areas

for 90 - 120 seconds (for 1 area). We have experienced

that when we stimulte acupoints a smaller dose is

required as compared with the stimulation of areas

which are not acupoints. The doses are different for

laser therapy and laser acupuncture.

U can visit the following site with excellent

references on laser therapy:

www.laser.nu

If U have any further queries please ask.

Best regards,
