rheum is the condition of Damp, as in rheumatic, rheumatism

phlegm is the actual substance of Damp with Heat

where did Heat come from you might ask?

traditionally phlegm is considered to have integral Heat even if it is

seemingly Cold in presentation

in traditional work one is wary of applying moxa heat to phlegm because

it may dislodge and travel upwards in the direction of Rising Heat

examples of phlegm:

if in subcutaneous tissue this is a phlegmatic nodule

if on tendon sheath this is a solid fibrous cyst

if in lower warmer it is the cause of a slippery pulse and is Damp

if on Heart it can be Stagnation of a serious nature

if on Heart and unsteady it can cause irregular beats

if in Lung it can be pneumonia with sputum

if this ran Dry it can be pneumonia with blood in sputum

if in Pericardium it can cause mania & irrational behavior

all of the above are examples of, largely, Cold Phlegm

if all became Heated a different picture would present

rheum as a condition which describes all of above would not be in it

self a pathogen

if one must take it to be one, in traditional work we would use the word

Damp instead

phlegm has been a mystery little discussed over the centuries

in my thinking it forms 3 quarters of most manifestations seen in practice

a word about Heat in Phlegm

it is always there, and can cause interesting surprises with the

uninitiated sotor the brave of heart
