Guest guest
Hello All; I have an interesting question and thought someone here might be able to answer it. When Ginseng is growing in nature, as in Asia, preferably in the Changbai Mountain Range, does it grow in shaded, dense wet areas? Or does it prefer much sunlight? I am most fascinated with its growing habbits. I think it grows similar to our " Devils Club " here in Alaska. Thanks for the insight. Guest guest
Hello Nicholas: Ginseng grown in Canada requires shade from the direct sunlight. it grows naturally in an old forest with the canopy protecting it against a hot sun. In a field, when grown by a farmer, they have to build a 10 foot canopy and drape dark cloth with a few holes in it to again, protect it from the sun. It is difficult to grow because of this and very suceptable to mould if it is not drained properly. You then have to keep it growing for 5 years for the root to be large enough to harvest. Seeda have to be buried for a year or tricked into thinking they have gone through a winter in the freezer. Good luck! Aqupoint
Guest guest
William- Thank you for the note. I was wondering myself. I know they can be little buggers trying to grow. I personally have a small bed of them, which came to me as wet root from the Changbai Mountain Range. My friend has been kind enough to send me some seeds. I have about 600 seeds, that I would like to try to grow. We have extremely cold winters here, as you know. Average winter here can yield -30F. Thanks again for your help. Guest guest
Nicholas : You may want to try looking for and Ontario Agriculture Ministry website for more onfo. Here in Ontario, in Delhi, the Ministry is supporting research into Ginseng and has a few plots trying different things to help with the mould problem.
