Guest guest
Hi all, Taken from: http://www.mhra.gov.uk/home/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE <http://www.mhra.gov.uk/home/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE & useSecondary=true & ssDocName=CON2022596 & ssTargetNodeId=389> & useSecondary=true & ssDocName=CON2022596 & ssTargetNodeId=389 The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recovered further traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) that have tested positive for toxic ingredients. Recent test results received by the MHRA have confirmed high levels of mercury and arsenic, which pose a threat to consumer's health. An unannounced inspection of a traditional Chinese medicine wholesaler in London, conducted by Agency investigators, uncovered the supply of two traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) -Fufang Lu Hui and Zhuifeng Tongu Wan -containing very high levels of mercury. Fufang Luhui Jiaonang capsules were found to contain around 13% mercury, and were supplied in blister packs contained within a cream and blue carton. The Agency first became aware of Fufang Luhui Jiaonang back in July 2004, when it warned consumers that it had been recalled from 35 outlets across the UK after being found to contain around 11 % mercury. Dr. Linda Anderson from the MHRA said: " The toxic effects of mercuric salts such as those found in the products tested are well known. The levels found could initially cause nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache and lead to serious damage to the kidneys and the nervous system. Any pregnant woman taking the products would be at risk of miscarriage and possible damage to the unborn foetus. " Zhuifeng Tougu Wan was supplied in the form of 'ball bearing' type red pills which were found to contain around 3% mercury. The pills were supplied in a white opaque plastic bottle with a screw top and a mustard yellow and gold label. Warm regards, Attilio D'Alberto Doctor of (Beijing, China) B.Sc.
