See http://www.roberthelmer.ca/einfections02.html for more detail. The complete Chinese medical diagnosis of Nathan’s [ear] condition according to the 4 examinations was SP Xu w ST Heat, Food Stag and Dampness/Phlegm. Heat rises in many pathological processes of the body. In ear infections, this heat travels up to the inner ear via an internal pathway or channel that connects ST and intestines with the inner ear. This ancient TCM theory of heat traveling up an internal pathway correlates with a study published in the February 9, 2002 issue of The Lancet where researchers analyzed the fluid in the ears of 54 children with ear infections (OME). The surprised researchers found 45 of the children digestive enzymes from the stomach (pepsin and pepsinogen) were at concentrations 1000 times higher than expected in the child’s ears. It appears that when a young child is lying on their back, the acidic liquid from the stomach can flow to the back of the child’s throat and then flow into the Eustachian tube [see Addendum 2: Eustachian Tube]. This would then cause irritation (heat in TCM) and swelling (dampness in TCM) thus, resulting in an ear infection. In my opinion, this sounds like what a TCM doctor refers to as stomach heat counterflowing upwards. This theory is also substantiated by the improvement of ear infections in clinical practice when including Chinese herbs that clear stomach heat and downbear counterflow in the patient’s formula.
