Labor induction

Has anyone had success inducing labor on a pregnant woman with

acupuncture? I have yet to see it work, especially using the classic

points of LI-4, GB-21, Sp-6, UB-60. There must be a whole lot more to

it than simple needling. I have heard of success using UB-32 with very

strong high frequency electro-stim for both labor pain and induction,

but have not seen it myself. Are there other points that people have

used with success?

Thanks!

Re: Ideas on acupuncture during pregnancy?

I have used GB 21 in pregnancy for such things as headaches and back

pain, both upper and lower back. I also use it to lessen the chance of

miscarriage. I insert at 15-30 degree angle with either no manipulation

or a very slight tonifying (1/8th turn clockwise) technique to encourage

qi upward. Although I have not seen this point used specifically for

abortion or to induce labor, I would imagine this could only be done

with very strong reducing techniques and even then, with unreliable

results. GB 21 could be used to induce labor (again with a reducing

technique) if combined with other lower extremity points, but I believe

it is quite safe when combined with other upper, qi raising points and

needling techniques. If one is uncertain of their ability to direct qi

upward, best to avoid GB21. Matt Bauer

I have used Li4 and SP6 with high stim and have put 4 woman in labor in

about 45 min. watch to see if the fetus moves into breach, can happen with this

type of induction. If so moxa GB34 untill baby moves, could take 30 min or

more.

Thanks for the note on GB-34. I have moved the fetus out of breach position some

15 times with the traditional moxa of Bl-67. It has not failed me once.

Also, one can needle Sp-6 and Li-4 less agressively and expect labour to start

within a day.

That way the body can decide better when or if it is ready.

It seems always more graceful to me to work with nature as much as possible

instead of overriding it.
