Janet,

HPV, aka Human papillomavirus, is an STD, that can cause genital warts

and/or cancer.

I guess you could say it's similar to Herpes, in the respect that it's not

curable, but it can certainly be treated.

If you will take a look here, it will give you a little more information.

http://www.ashastd.org/stdfaqs/hpv.html

If you are looking for an herbal treatment for this....I don't know of

one....but your client could discuss treatment options with her physician.

I will look around, and see if I can come up with further information for

you.

HTH a bit!

I believe it is human papilloma virus.

http://www.health-science-report.com/cgi-bin/alotek.cgi

here is a link, just google and you will find your answers in the magic genie of

google...

just kidding. well, hpv I believe it is something that everyone has in their

system, it just takes something to trigger it like stresses of a severe

sickness, or life's curveball. or it can be caught, but I think only thru sexual

contact. only a doctor will know for sure.

good luck in your research!

Well I had never heard of it which is why I asked. There are

so many knowledgeable folks on this list I knew they would

point me in the right direction to research.

Thanks for the response.

Hi Folks,

Actually, HPV and HIV aren't one in the same .. but both can be sexually

transmitted ...

http://obgyn.uihc.uiowa.edu/Patinfo/Adhealth/hpv.htm

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a very common virus (germ) that causes

abnormal cells or growth of tissue on the skin of the body. HPV can

cause abnormal tissue changes on the feet, hands, vocal cords, mouth and

genital (sex) organs. Over 60 types of HPV have been identified so far.

Each type infects certain parts of the body. In gynecology, we are

concerned about the types of HPV that infect the female organs.

Why Is HPV Important?

HPV is important because the abnormal tissue caused by some types of the

virus can lead to cancer of the female organs. Finding and treating

HPV-related tissue changes is a way to prevent cancer.

Where Does HPV Grow?

HPV can grow on the cervix (opening to the uterus), vagina (birth

canal), vulva (lips of the vagina), urethra (opening urine comes

through) and the anus (opening for bowel movements).

There are two kinds of abnormal tissue caused by HPV: CONDYLOMA (warts)

and DYSPLASIA (pre-cancer). Doctors can evaluate you for presence of the

abnormal tissue by examining the skin of the vulva and vagina and by

doing a Pap smear.

* <http://obgyn.uihc.uiowa.edu/Patinfo/STD/warts.htm> CONDYLOMA

(GENITAL WARTS) are wart-like growths found in the genital area, most

commonly on the outside or vulva. They are usually painless, but may

cause itching, burning or slight bleeding. Warts can also be found

around the urethra and anus. Inside the vagina and on the cervix, warts

are usually flat and Pap smears usually alert us to their presence.

* DYSPLASIA is the presence of abnormal cells on the surface of

the skin. Dysplasia is not cancer, but may turn into cancer over a

period of years if it is not treated. Treatment gets rid of dysplasia so

that the tissue cannot turn into cancer.

The only way to tell if dysplasia is present on the skin of the genital

organs is by taking a Pap smear or a biopsy (piece of tissue). Dysplasia

can be evaluated through a magnifying glass called a colposcope, but

only the biopsy gives the final diagnosis. Dysplasia is most often found

on the cervix, but can also be found on the vagina and vulva.

How Is Human Papilloma Virus Spread?

At this time, very little is known about how or when people become

infected with HPV. There is research being done to answer some of these

questions. What we do know is that HPV is mainly spread through sexual

contact. Women may be exposed to HPV and not develop dysplasia or

genital warts for many years. Both men and women can be infected with

the virus and not know it.

What we do not know about HPV

1. When can a person with HPV give it to another person?

2. How long is a person with HPV able to give it to somebody else?

3. Why do some people who are exposed to HPV get condyloma or

dysplasia and other people do not?

Prevention

There are three ways to decrease exposure to HPV and other sexually

transmitted diseases.

1. Using condoms (rubbers) during sex.

2. Monogamy - have sex with only one partner. To be effective,

monogamy must include both partners and be long term. It is helpful to

discuss this with your partner.

3. Abstinence - not having sex. This does not mean that other forms

of closeness need to be eliminated.

Examination Of Male Sexual Partners

We recommend that male sexual partners of women with genital warts be

examined by a physician. If warts are found on exam the partner can be

treated. If warts are not found, the male may still carry HPV, but show

no signs of it. Some physicians are more knowledgeable about genital

warts than others. Dermatology, Family Practice or Urology specialists

will likely be most helpful. Ask the nurse or physician if you have more

questions.

Cigarette Smoking

If you have been exposed to HPV and also smoke, the chance that you will

develop dysplasia is much higher. If you already have dysplasia,

stopping smoking may reduce your chance of the dysplasia coming back

after treatment.

I just read in two doctors articles saying that this is not HIV. They

elaborated several huge differences and said to be careful to ensure you

dont get HIV. These are two completly seperate things. Where did you get

your fact from? That is a very scary thing to throw out there with no facts

to support it. Please send a link so we can read about it too..

?sitearea=cri

is a link about HPV and about what it is/does and how it is not HIV. Great

link about how this is sexually transmitted etc... very informative much

like a lot of the links already sent

I haven't been following this thread very closely, but HIV and HPV are two

different things.

Human Papilloma Virus or HPV is NOT the same as Human Immunodeficiency Virus

or HIV.

Hi Janet - It is true that HPV and HIV are entirely different viruses and

may be spread sexually. HPV can develop into cervical cancer.

leads to AIDS.

Virus is what they have in common....plenty of viruses around.

I had never heard of HPV until recently. Okay, that shows my age but, oh well..

Anyway, I did a search for information on HPV. How do you figure this is HIV ?

It is totally different and is warts. If it was HIV then it would be called HIV

and not HPV. It is genital warts .

Dear Deb,

Go to your local health food store and ask for Red Yeast Ricc

capsules. My mother's doctor put her on it about a year ago to lower her

cholesterol too. I bought the capsules but my mom said that they were too

big and refused to take them. :-( So I hope that they help you. Good Luck in

your search.

i wanted to thank all that responded to my request for information on the

red yeast rice. seems that there are alot of people out there that use

this.

i did do a google search on this and the very first one came up with

this url

http://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/substances_view/1,1525,10054,00.html

it states that in 2001, the unregulated nutritional supplement was

withdrawn by the FDA.

seems that the agency determined that it was chemically too similar to

the prescription medication

Mevacor and should be classified as a drug and controlled by the federal

government.

now the copyright date is 2000. just wondering if anyone has had any

problems getting this.

i've since seen many online shops selling it but just wanted to know the

stats on this or

if it never came into being.

thanks

  • 1 year later...

Is anyone aware of a holistic school that accepts the peil grant or

any federal assistance. I'm trying for an online holistic healthcare

practitioner class. I would like to attend clayton collage of natural

health, but they don't qualify for federal assistance progams (I don't

think they do anyway) or any others for that matter. I realy would

like to do this but money is an obstical at this time.
